Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders ’ Association of America . The article contained the slate of officers of a '' membership proxy ” and noted that the slate representing the proxy of the Board of Directors would appear in this issue .
On the Nominating Committee for 1969 for the Breeders ’ Association slate were Roy Davis , Steve Hill and Captain E . A . Self . They have nominated the following :
DeWITT OWEN , DVM — One of the most highly regarded veterinarians in the Tennessee area , Dr . Owen has served one term of office as a Director of the Breeders ’ Association . He is up for re-election in 1969 . Dr . Owen maintains a large animal hospital in Franklin , Tennessee , and does extensive work in all areas of veterinary ’ medicine , including breeds other than Walking Horses . He is especially known for his work with the large breeding farms in Middle Tennessee .
C . M . ( CHARLIE ) WATERS , JR . - Charlie Waters is a long-time Walking Horse enthusiast and is well respected throughout the business . He has participated in all areas of activity including breeding and showing . His family has shown horses for many years and he is a partner in a major Walking Horse sale to be held in Tennessee this fall . Charlie is from Alexandria , Louisiana , and is an officer of a national insurance company as well as being involved in real estate and other areas of sales .
The election will be held at the annual membership meeting at the Association office in Lewisburg , Tennessee , May 24 , 1969 , and voting can be done either in person or by proxy ballot . It should be emphasized again that both proxy ballots are legal and that any member of the association has the right to nominate anyone whom he pleases for any position open for election . Last year approximately eight hundred ballots were cast , indicating that there were many members who did not bother to vote . Well , this year you have a choice , and you are urged to vote and to become involved in the affairs of YOUR association .
Remember . . . you have already received a BLUE Proxy representing the ballot of Donald Franks and Dr . Bob Womack . You will shortly receive a WHITE Proxy representing the ballot of DeWitt Owen and C . M . Waters . You are requested to send in only ONE Proxy . . . whichever represents the two men who you feel will do the best job for the Association and the membership . " Vote as you please , but please vote .”
DEEP SOUTH SHOWS BEGIN WITH EVANS , GEORGIA LEADING THE WAY
As the show season begins to pick up a head of steam in the deep south , the annual Evans , Georgia Horse Show served to indicate that 1969 is going to be a year of enthusiasm and top competition . Held on
March 29 this year , the Evans show is always one of the earliest of the season . Donald Paschal of Woodbury , Tennessee was the judge and he did an excellent job .
There were nine Walking Horse classes with at least fourteen horses in each class . The top class saw twenty-two entries with competition being keen and interest high . Horses were entered from Alabama , Georgia , North Carolina , South Carolina and Tennessee . Complete results are in the Horse Show Results section of this issue .
GUEST SPEAKER — Vic Thompson , well-known professional trainer , is pictured as he addressed the Georgia Walking Horse Exhibitor ’ s Association annual meeting at the Steaks Restuarant in Atlanta . Vic went over the 1969 rules for the group after telling them of his early days as a horse trainer in Georgia .
GWHEA KICK-OFF
The Georgia Walking Horse Exhibitor ’ s Association held its annual Show Season " Kick-Off ” Dinner and General Meeting the latter part of March in Atlanta . The meeting attracted the largest group this association has ever assembled , with 153 Georgia horsemen in attendance .
Vic Thompson , president of the Walking Horse Trainers Association , addressed the group . Vic went over the rules for 1969 in detail and answered questions from the floor .
After Vic concluded his remarks , the group viewed the official films of the 1968 Celebration . The film was provided courtesy of the Celebration , Inc .
A special award was presented to Mr . and Mrs . Malcolm Cade by the Association . Malcolm was president of the Association in 1968 and his wife was secretary . Under their guidance , the Association experienced a tremendous growth in interest last year . The members elected to give them this special award as a token of their appreciation .
The enthusiasm demonstrated at this meeting is a tribute to the officers of the Association . President Bill Landrum and his fellow officers are doing a tremendous job this year . This organization is dedicated to the growth of the breed in Georgia and they are doing a top-flight job .
