There ’ s a lot of talk about the good three-year-old
stallion owned by Mrs . Lila Travis Mason of Winchester . ACE ’ S SHADOW MAN is black with white points and is in training with Red Stacey at Volunteer Stables . Affectionately called " PIDD ” by Lila , who raisecj him , he ’ s by PIDDLEY and out of a WILSON ’ S ACE mare . Lila has already been offered an attractive price for this one but is not too anxious to sell him .
News from Mrs . Gene Eaton Owens , Phoenix , Arizona , proves that she too has a three-year-old stallion of whom she ’ s proud . He is bv SHADOW ’ S LUMIN AIRE and out of a BILLY WILSON mare . In training with Ray Rhoads in California , he ’ s been shown twice and has one second and one third . This was a late
July colt , so he has some growing to do .
I enjoyed visiting two local stables lately . First stop was the Ernest Smith farm , home of SIR WINSTON S . Kenneth Walker is training a beautiful chestnut coming three-year-old mare with a most impressive back end . She ’ s owned by Ernest , and is a granddaughter of old MERRY BOY and a granddaughter of MID NIGHT MACK on her dam ’ s side .
Charlie Walker is doing a great job with WIN STON ’ S MIDNIGHT SUN . This is the two-year-old stallion owned by Freeman & Millard that was mentioned in Barnstorming in the January issue of the VOICE . He is by SIR WINSTON S and is out of a MIDNIGHT SUN mare .
There are eight yearlings here , three of them fillies . Of the eight , four are black , three chestnut , and one bay . Seven of these colts are by SIR WINSTON S and one is by the other Smith stallion — WILSON ’ S MER RY BOY , a son of old MERRY BOY . He ’ s twenty-six years old and in prime condition .
Next stop was the Edd Hill Stable where there are four horses in training . The star of the stable at this point is WINSTON ’ S ZIP , a black three-year-old stallion owned jointly by Smith & Hill . He ’ s by SIR WIN STON and out of a MIDNIGHT SECRET mare .
Mrs . Hill has a two-year-old stallion , LUCKY BEAU , by MIDNIGHT BEAU . He ’ s black with a blaze face and is a fine big colt .
WINSTON ’ S HARDROCK is a black pony owned by Hill and Jimmy Hannah of Decherd . By SIR WIN STON and out of a line-bred WILSON ALLEN mare all this pony lacks is someone to show him , and Edd says he ’ ll have this solved by the time show season rolls around .
The fourth is a blue roan four-year-old mare . Owned by Jim McKenzie of Lynchburg , Tennessee , she ’ s bv a son of MIDNIGHT MACK K . *
A new saddle club was formed recently at Decherd Officers elected were Ronnie Cowan , president- J B Payne , vice president ; Elaine Arnold , treasurer ; and Carolyn Hannah , recorder .
A board of directors was also named . It includes Joe Arnold , Jimmy Hannah , Blake Hatchett , Jimmy Merritt , George Reid , Don Sneed , Carolyn Starnes Carter Stewart and Jackie Summers . Plans are being made for horse shows and the above-mentioned board is responsible for preparing the show grounds and programs .
HORSEMEN TO BE TOLD " WHY ” AS WELL AS " HOW ”
" Today ’ s horsemen are sophisticated — they Want to know the ' why ’ as well as the ' how .’ To them knowledge is not solely for the privileged few , but for everyone who searches for it . The Horse Science School is designed to fill this need ,” according to Dr M . E . Ensminger , director of the equine School .
This year , new courses will be offered in business aspects of horse production , lameness and wound management , dressage and schooling your horse , and stable technology . Altogether , there will be 24 different courses taught by 20 instructors . The schedule for the four major divisions follows : Horses and Horsemanship Course — 5 / 2 days .
