SOUTHERN ALABAMA NEWS
We recently received some Barnstorming news from
Paul Sawyer of Mobile, Alabama. Paul visits many of
the stables in the Southern Alabama area and we ap
preciate his sharing this news with us. Paul writes:
" As I visited the stable of Tom Ellis in Mobile I saw
a well-laid-out ring and a beautiful barn. Tom at the
present time is busy working his good aged gelding
named CASTRO’S RED CLOUD. Last year Tom fin
ished third in total points on his gelding.
"Out at the Irby Stables, trainer Ty Irby is busy
getting his horses ready to show. Ty is working a
good aged stallion named SUN’S MR. PICK. This
horse is jointly owned by M. C. Farmer and Dr. L. E.
Irby. In the Walking Pony calsses Ty will have FRED
DIE THE FREELOADER, owned by R. B. Jeffries of
Citronelle, Alabama. Ty’s sister Sally is also an active
exhibitor in Walking Horses classes throughout Ala
bama, and will be showing a good mare, STORMY’S
BELLE, in juvenile classes.
"Up in Frisco City they are making preparations
for their Fourth Annual Kiwanis Club Charity Horse
Show. The show will take place May 31, starting at
1:30 at the high school athletic field. There will also
be an evening performance beginning at 7. The Walk
ing Horse judge will be the Hon. Sam Yarbrough of
Pulaski. Tenn. This show will offer S2,500 in prize
money. In the past it has attracted such great Walk
ing Horses as the current World Champion Walking
Pony SETTING SUN’S APOLLO, the World Champ
ion Men’s Amateur Riders 50 Years and Over PRIDE
OF SPRING, SUN UP R, and MR. FREE WHEEL.
Veeks of Frisco City tells me he has a nice

i; you are ever in the Selma, Alabama area, you
ov. e it to yourself to stop by the Claude Shaw Stables.
Claude was one of the Celebration judges last year.
His home and training establishment are about five
mile> from Selma on Highway 22 South. He and Sallie
have two children: Buc, sixteen years old; and Bill,
two years old.
Claude has sixteen horses in training and will have
some good two-year-olds this year. One is a filly by
MAC K'S SPEEDWAY that has really come along
and looks like she will be a real threat. She is owned
by Mr. and Mrs. Cary Travis of Montgomery. The
Travises also own a good black two-year-old stud by
KEENE’S GO BOY. Watch for him this year. Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Gober of Prattville, Al. own a nice filly by
SPUR’S CLOWN that Claude has just started.
When the three-year-olds hit the ring this year,
Claude Shaw will be right in the thick of it. The one
that really will make you sit back and talk is a black
HANDSHAKER stud owned by B. I. Sullivan of Fort
Deposit, Ala. His name is HANDSHAKER’S MAGIC
MAKER. Claude also has a good filly named HAND
SHAKER’S APRIL owned by Mr. and Mrs Doug
Smith of Prattville. Claude will probably show her the
first half of the season and Mrs. Smith will show her
in the Ladies Amateur classes in the last half of the
season. Claude also is loaded with two other top
three-year-olds. One is a black stud colt who is owned
by Oscar Edwards of Montgomery. This colt was late
Claude also has three top junior horses that would
make any competitor sit up and take notice. A black
44
stud owned by J. C. Cannon of Thomaston is shown
as COPPER CANNON. Another good one is SPUT
NIK’S ACE, owned by Charlie Stringer of Independ
ence. This horse was also started late. The other jun
ior horse, who would make a fine amateur mount, is
BAD NEWS. He is owned by Dr. J. W. Johnson of
Franklin.
