1969 Voice Of The Tennessee Walking Horse 1969 April Voice RS | Page 27

He was going to the stable every day and worked carefully with M . L . and the horses that he was riding . Lonny could not help but notice how M . L . had changed since the accident . He was much more serious about his work and had proven to be invaluable in more ways than one . Lonny watched him very carefully as he worked a young colt , noticing that he was somewhat better than '' average ” in the saddle . The young ground man sat the horse well and had an uncanny sense of balance and a great pair of hands . He seemed to blend with each horse in a different way . . . depending upon the horse . Lonny watched and listened as M . L . carefully worked each horse , talking in a low , even tone in a way reminiscent of one of the truly great trainers of days gone by , and he thought to himself ... " I wonder what the future holds for a Negro in the training profession ?”
A week had passed and Lonny had made a decision . He called M . L . into the office and said , " Martin Luther , would you like to go to a horse show this weekend over in Rathmore ? We could show that twoyear-old filly and the age gelding . I think it would be good for all of us , don ’ t you ?” The colored boy looked at him and said , " Ah . . . well , that ’ s fine with me — but how you gonna ride with a cast ?” Lonny looked at him and , smiling , said , " Well , now — I just thought I ’ d let you ride . How about that ?”
