Show Horses, Pleasure Horses,
Many amateur and professional
trainers in Alabama are busy pre
paring for the upcoming show sea
son. Down at the Billy Brantley Sta
bles in Theodore, Alabama, there is
a lot of activity. The team of Lynn
Doughty and SETTING SUN’S AP
OLLO are back at work after a long
winter. Lynn and APOLLO finished
the season last year by winning the
Southern Championship at Montgom
ery. Lynn also will be showing the full
sister to APOLLO named APO LYN
in mare classes this year.
Billy will be showing a lot of young
horses this season. In four-year-old
classes he will be showing a colt by
MACK K’S HANDSHAKER named
HANSHAKER'S HANDYMAN own
ed by Slocum & Doughty. Bill has a
good string of amateur riders includ
ing Corky Ollinger on GO BOY’S
DIPLOMAT, Tommy Doughty on
MYSTIC TIMES, and Vance Slocum
on BALLY HOO’S APOLLO. It looks
like a banner year for the Billy
Brantley Stables.
In Orrville, trainer Jimmy Ellis is
in the process of building a new barn.
It will be two hundred feet long and
will contain all the modern facilities.
Jimmy says he will train mostly
young horses this year. He has two
two-3-ear-old fillies for Lloyd Wood of
Tuscaloosa. In three-year-old classes
he will be showing EBONY’S MAS
TER COPY for W. R. Mitchell of
Mobile and HANDSHAKERS RED
ACE for Mrs. Lyman Phillips, Jr. of
Brewton. In aged mare classes he
will show GO BOY’S CADILLAC
JEWEL for Ellis Farms, Orrville. In
the three-year-old mare classes it will
be CLOWNS FAIR LADY for Ellis
Farms. In the stake classes he will
have MR. FREE WHEEL. Jimmy and
FREE WHEEL completed a success
ful season by winning the Junior
Championship at Montgomery. This
big bay stud by MACK K’S HAND
SHAKER is considered by many rail-
birds to be a prime contender for
World Grand Championship honors
in 1969.
