What a glorious way to begin the show season in the gorgeous new S5 million Dare County Coliseum in Madison, Wisconsin. It offers facilities second to none. This is a big show and getting bigger and bet­ ter every year. The show committee tries its hardest and never stops improving things. Don Utz of Lexing­ ton, Mo. and Carl Leigh of Victor, N. Y. were the judges of the saddle and Walking Horses. Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were the special added attraction, and everyone enjoyed them, in spite of the fact that he borrowed an Arabian to ride instead of a Walking Horse. The Walking Horse classes were good sized, with quality as well as quantity, and horses from five dif­ ferent states. Making a real sweep of the show was the good-striding, head-shaking REGAL GOLD, with owner Walter McDuffee aboard in the Amateur, Open and Stake, and niece Ruth Ann McDuffee taking the blue in the Ladies. Art Titus of Batavia, 111. is the capable trainer for this top gelding. A very pretty, good-going black mare by the name of WELL’S DARK VELVET won the Junior Class, shown by Donovan Heltibridle for owner James Mil­ ler of Boone, Iowa. Reserve in this class was owner- rider Robert Bull on his MERRY SAMMEYE KAYE, with third to SUN’S DREAM GIRL, Jim Baum up for Mr. and Mrs. Leo Baum’s River Tree Farm. Fourth was SHADOW’S RHYTHM BOY, George McGUvra, owner, and fifth was Gretchen Peterson, her first time in the ring on her new STROLLING PIED PIPER. 52 Reserve to REGAL GOLD in the Amateur Class was BLUE VELVET, Reatha Avey up for Willowdayle Farms. Mrs. Sally Oudenhoven gave her MIGHTY GO BOY for Permanent Construction Co was fourth and fifth to GO BOY’S W. F. SPECIAL, Larry Pickhardt up for Mrs. M. Bemouski. In the Open and Stake Classes, second, third and fifth placings were the same; second to SHADOW’S ROYAL HEIR, Sue Templeton up for Robert Bathke; third to SHINING JUPITER, Lonnie Templeton in the irons for Arnold Hanke, and fifth to SATIN SUN- DUST, Clarence Johnson riding for Willowdale Farm. Fourth in the open was BLUE VELVET, and in the stake GO BOY’S MASTERPIECE, owned and shown by William Jones. Second to REGAL GOLD in the Ladies was COLO­ NEL PAT, Mary Lynn Treis up for Harold Schwengel. MIGHTY GO BOY and Sally Oudenhoven were third with fourth going to NIGHT SON H.G., Jeanne Helti­ bridle up for Dr. Dorothy Muirhead, and fifth place to STROLLING PIED PIPER and Gretchen Peterson. FLASH! Results just in from the Milwaukee Spring Horse Show: REGAL GOLD won the Juvenile with Lyn Phillips aboard, owned by Walter McDuffee, MID­ NIGHT LADY Y reserve, Karen Baum up for Berna­ dette Ruckdashel; REGAL GOLD also won the ama­ teur, Mr. McDuffee in the irons, MIGHTY GO BOY second for Mrs. Sally Oudenhoven; EBONY’S SECRE­ TARY took the junior for C. Patton, Glenn Skyler up, with the red going to George McGilvra on his SHAD- Voice of the Tennessee Walking Horse
