This spring Leo and Jean , eighteenyear-old Jim , sixteen-year-old Jeff and twelve-year-old Karen made re peated trips around the midwest and to the South to find the horse they wanted . They bought SUN ’ S HOLI DAY from an owner in Dallas , Texas . HOLIDAY , a magnificent six-yearold stallion , was left in training with Buddy Hugh to be shown in big-time Southern competition and to try for the World ’ s Grand Championship in September . MIGHTY SPUR was pur chased from a man in Alabama . He is a five-year-old sorrel stallion , and is also in training with Buddy Hugh .
SHADOW OF ICHABOD , bought in Georgia , was brought to Wisconsin to be shown in Wisconsin . A twoyear-old stud , SUN ’ S MARK II , came in the HOLIDAY deal and was left with Buddy Hugh .
Over the summer , colts raised at River Tree Farm were broke and the Baums started training them . They showed SHADOW OF ICHABOD in Wisconsin , Illinois and Indiana . Bud dy Hugh showed HOLIDAY in the South . Jim was busy shoeing River Tree horses and other show horses . He also worked in Tennessee for part of the summer . Karen and Jeff showed in Wisconsin and repeatedly won ribbons .
The show season is over and the children are back in school : Jim in pre-vet at Iowa State ; Jeff at Oconomowoc High ; Karen at Oconomowoc Junior High . The dust has settled and the results are as follows :
MIGHTY SPUR will be sold as a top amateur or good open horse . SUN ’ S MARK II is coming along well and will develop into a good-togreat show horse . SUN ’ S MEMORY , a beautiful two-year-old filly broke by Jim and being trained by Jean , shows promise of being a top show mare . A yearling colt , THE MERRY BOMBER by RED BOMBER , was green-broke by Jim and Leo and is being trained by Jeff and Karen . He is a big , spunky colt and holds champ ionship promise . SHADOW OF ICH ABOD started slowly but came on strong , winning the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship , the Open Reserve Championship , and the Northern Illinois Amateur Reserve Championship .
SUN ’ S HOLIDAY started as a vir tually unknown horse at the begin ning of the year and emerged as one of the top contenders for the World ’ s Grand Championship . He won top honors at Smith Station , Alabama ; Searcy , Arkansas ; Etowah , Wood bine , Lafayette , Petersburg and Tullahoma , Tennessee — all in the heart of the Walking Horse country . HOLI DAY ’ S showing at Tullahoma three weeks before the Celebration had everyone talking . He was great and hitting his peak just right for the biggest show of all . On the way back from Tullahoma , he injured a rear leg . A week before the Celebration , it began bothering him . Consequent ly he had to be withdrawn from the championship show . This year there was no World ’ s Grand Championship for River Tree Farm , but SUN ’ S HOLIDAY was shown more than any other top contender and won more blues . Top trainers have called from Tennessee and the Carolinas to ask if they could train some of River
Tree ’ s stock .
The future looks bright with young stock working well , colts sired by HOLIDAY and ICHABOD due in the spring , a good horse winning in the north and a great horse winning in the south . More will be heard about Tennessee Walking Horses from Ixonia , Wisconsin .
The Baums are deeply involved in all areas of Walking Horse activity and promotion , and this year Mrs . Baum ( Jean ) was chosen " Horse woman of the Year " by the Wisconsin Walking Horse Association . This is a fitting tribute to fine people who believe that " you get out of the Walking Horse business what you put into it ,” and they have certainly put a great deal of effort and dedication into the breed in their part of the country .
