THE VIRGINIA VOICE by CHARLOTTE BARNES Lauderdale Stables Rt. 2 Buchanan, Virginia All of us here at Lauderdale Stables were happy to meet Charles Mullins. Cumberland Valley Walking Horse Stables, Enola, Pennsylvania. Mr. Mullins was on his way home from Shelbyville and stopped to pick up a mare purchased by one of his customers from F. H. Tucker, Hurt, Virginia. A recent invitation from our good friend and neigh bor, John Shiflett, E.C.&S. Farm, was a pleasant sur prise. John always has good stock, but prefers to show them off in the ring. SHADOW’S MERRY MAG IC, a close-coupled handsome three-year-old bay with silver mane and tail, is really walking right. SHADOW was a top two-year-old and was never shown without getting tied, but it looks as though he’s going to make an even better three-year-old. This little stud horse ias a natural back end and a big, bold front end to go with it. Present plans are for Mackie, John’s fif- teen-year-oid son, to show SHADOW. This young rider has lots of ability for his age and should do very well! John also consented to let O. R. Robinson, Buchan- and me ' -e his pride and joy, GO BOY’S ES QUIRE. ESQ IRE is a superb animal that appears to have all the traits of his famous sire, MERRY GO BOY. This big, black stud colt is about as loose as they come and it is now beginning to look like he is going to be one of those rare big-licking horses. John has been very patient with ESQUIRE and has brought him along slowly, never pushing him — and it looks as though it’s going to pay off. The last horse pulled out of the stable, but certainly not the least, was O. R. Robinson’s much-discussed colt. This trim little filly, by EBONY MASTERPIECE out of a MACK K mare, is certainly going to be one of that kind! Linda and Joe Houck, Galax, recently invited me up to take a look at MAC’S MISCHIEF. This handsome Amateur gelding has three perfect gaits and is being considered for John Vaughn. Joe is trainer for Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn at Windhaven Stables. As aiways, it was a thrill to see Mrs. Vaughn’s out standing mare, SOUVENIR’S STUCK-UP GIRL. While Mrs. Vaughn was busy adding a new son to their family, Air. Vaughn did a fine job of tying STUCK-UP GIRL second at Raleigh. Joe is getting along real well with his stake horse, JET’S FAIR PLAY. This horse placed tenth at the Celebration in 1966 with Dick Alyer in the saddle. He was purchased by the Vaughns last May. Joe and FAIR PLAY didn’t have time to get to know each other last year, but should really come on strong this season. A three-year-old black stallion, MAJOR’S BLACK .98 STAR by B. MAJOR WILSON, is showing a lot of promise. This stud was purchased last August from E. Carl Hengen, Lawn Vale Farm, and was just put under saddle in September. He has three good gaits and looks like the kind of colt that wants to rare back and go! Charlie Overstreet, Vinton, recently purchased a three-year-old from H. B. Hauk, Kingsport, Tenn. This all-black stud colt is by MIDNIGHT SUN and is out of a MIDNIGHT SUN mare. F. H. Tucker, Hurt, took a liking to John Shiflett’s two-year-old B. MAJOR WILSON colt and his Junior SOUVENIR horse, both here at Lauderdale in train ing, and purchased both of them. Doodie Power, formerly with J. B. Sapp, opened his own barn the first week in February. Doodie has all the facilities necessary for training Walking Horses and is working eighteen at the present time. He and his lovely wife Nancy are very proud of their new place and will make you feel welcome at any time. WISCONSIN WALKS Jean S. (Mrs. Leo)Baum Box 250 Ixonia, Wisconsin 53036 Activities among Walking Horse people in these parts are running hot and heavy, with the good news that Walking Horse classes at the shows continue to grow and, many times, to be some of the biggest classes at the shows. Membership in the WWHA is still climbing, and sales of both show and pleasure horses go on and on. The Sorden family of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin (Dale, Joyce, and children Steve and Tina), are one of the newest Walking Horse families, having just bought a thr ee-year-old Walking Horse gelding, their very first horse! If they aren’t the most excited people in the world! They were going to buy just a "horse” horse, but were so enamoured of our great breed from the shows and from the pleasure Walkers they rode, that this choice was a must for them. This is the way to start! Other newsworthy notes: GO BOY’S W. F. SPECIAL changed owners; Mrs. Marge Bemouski sold him to Bob Peterson and Bob Moosbrugger. Larry Pickhardt is continuing to show him. DICTATOR AGAIN was bought by Mr. Noble of Mequon, from Harold Schwengel, Mary Lynn Treis the agent. Art Titus Stables of Batavia, Illinois, is doing very well with their Walking Horses. Heading the list is REGAL GOLD, owned by the fine gentleman Walter McDuffee of North Aurora, Illinois. This head-shakin’ big-striding bay gelding is winning everything in sight these days, including Madison, Milwaukee, Janesville, Beaver Dam and Fond du Lac (all WWHA circuit shows). He is reminiscent of RED BOMBER in his winning ways, his looks, and his way of going. The McDuffees also own a black mare, DANNY’S BLACK ROSE. Phil Krueger’s Permanent Construction Company also has two good Walkers with Art. INVASION’S BIG BOY is a vastly improved horse, shown by Phil and Nancy Noeske. Voice of the Tennessee Walking Horse
