As one visits the stables in this state , it is evident that the Walking Horse has written for itself an unmatched success story in the state already famous for its Saddlebreds and Thoroughbreds . It has conquered what can easily be considered a highly competitive market with an overall increase in numbers of 300 % within the last five years and an immeasurable increase in quality of the horses involved .
One of the most successful stables in Kentucky is undoubtedly Cotton Farms of Dry Ridge , owned by Mr . and Mrs . B . C . Cotton . Fifty-three head of fine broodmares , foals , yearlings and show horses grace
the barns and pastures of this beautiful establishment .
Sharing the spotlight at Cotton Farms are SUN DUST BLACK MAJIC and CHIEF WABASH . SUN
DUST BLACK MAJIC was shown in twelve stakes last year and brought the blue out the gate after nine of them . He is truly a big-lick horse with conformation to match . CHIEF WABASH headlines the breeding pro ' am . He is a top-bred MIDNIGHT SUN stallion ou : C MOONLIGHT ROMANCE , one of the top broodmares in the country . His ability to get fine
colts is evident in every pasture .
Another fine stable is owned by Gene Kelly and his sons , Tom and Pat . Aptly named Kelly Green Acres , it is designed exclusively for enjoyment of the Kelly family . Pat and Gene are showing a nice amateur gelding named CHARLIE BROWN , and Tom is putting his efforts into a fine junior horse named MAJOR ' S CHOREBOY .
Two fine broodmares are in foal to GO BOY ’ S GLO RY , who is being stood by Hulen Lunsford of Union , Kentucky , and a third is in Tennessee being bred to
SUN ’ S DELIGHT .
These two stables furnish just a sample of both the large and the small ones to be found in abundance throughout the state . The growth and popularity of the Tennessee Walking Horse as indicated by this can be attributed in a large part to the tireless efforts of the officers and members of the Kentucky Walking Horse Association who give freely of their time and money to promote the Walking Horse not only
in Kentucky , but everywhere . Their efforts are largely directed toward putting on
the Kentucky State Walking Horse Celebration each year . This fine show will be held once again this year in Shelbyville , Kentucky , according to Forest Margrave , Association president .

CARPETILE GAINS ACCEPTANCE AT LEADING HORSE BARNS
A covering material similar to carpeting in resilience and durable like tile floor covering is now being used by a number of horse breeders throughout the country . This covering material , called CarpeTile , is manufactured by Futurus , Inc . of Upland , California .
CarpeTile has the same feel and comfort as traditional carpeting materials , but it wears well enough to withstand the weight of heavy animals . It serves as both an outdoor and an indoor floor covering and is not affected by weathering . Thoroughbred breeders are using CarpeTile for diverse applications on their ranches and farms . It is being used in breeding barns , foal stalls and horse trailers , for instance .
One of its most important uses is in surgery recovery rooms . Veterinarians have found that CarpeTile makes an ideal floor covering for surgery recovery rooms because it is strong enough to withstand the wear and still provides a highly resilient surface so that the animal does not injure itself while recovering from the anesthetic . CarpeTile ’ s grooved squares are highly suitable for flushing to clean the floor surface
quickly and easily .
One of the most outstanding features of CarpeTile is its non-slip characteristic : the wetter CarpeTile gets , the better its traction . Horse breeders have found that they can completely eliminate the need for straw as a floor covering after installing CarpeTile throughout their barns . The horse feels comfortable and confident when walking on CarpeTile because it does not slip and the footing is resilient like turf . This material is installed as quickly and as easily as tile . It comes in one-foot squares , remaining uniform throughout the covered area when installed . If a square does become damaged it is quickly replaced .
CarpeTile is manufactured by a patented process . Strong nylon fibers , bonded with synthetic rubber , provide the resilience of traditional materials for carpeting . It is so strong that a tractor can be driven over it without damage to the material .
