BROADWAY SHOW TOPS SEASON FOR VIRGINIA WALKING HORSES
by Charlotte Barnes of the East and disappointed no one . In case you did not attend this year , you should definitely plan to go next year !
The highlight of the Horse Show Circuit in Virginia is always the Broadway show , called " The Little Celebration of the East .” The 21st Annual Show was held on July 5 and 6 with nearly 300 entries in the eleven Walking Horse classes . The trainers , owners and spectators came from North Carolina , West Virginia , Maryland , Pennsylvania , Maine and Virginia . Broadway boasts the finest facilities for their patrons in the state , and although they have a more than adequate parking area , cars had to be turned away before showtime Saturday night . They now have 100 permanent stalls on the grounds ( which were all filled ), a new ring and excellent lighting . The atmosphere was filled with excitement and congeniality , as everyone renewed old friendships and made new ones . All exhibitors and grooms were treated to a delicious chicken barbecue after the Friday night show . The hospitality of the sponsors , American Legion Post 278 , Mr . Fred M . Black and the people of
Broadway , was exceeded only by the quality of the fine stock .
Mr . Robert Burris of Franklin , Tennessee impressed everyone with his unbiased judging , as he tied all classes as he saw them , from the saddle down .
This great show got underway with a big class of fine three-year-olds and trainer Charles Mullins of Enola , Pennsylvania captured the first blue on GO GIRLS MIDNIGHT STAR . In the always-popular twoyear-old class , GO BOY ’ S ESQUIRE , piloted by John Shiflett of Buchanan , Virginia , thrilled the fans with his bold , cocky way of going . In the work-out , hotly contested by Ernie Bugg on DELIGHT ’ S DELUSION , and Joe Gibbs on CARBON ’ S BIG SHELBY , Mr . Shiflett ’ s showmanship and ESQUIRE ’ S flawless performance proved to be too much in this unusually large class of 15 top colts .
Many of the spectators had been waiting for a look at MISS BOMB , the mare purchased by " Dude ” Riddle to replace SUN ’ S ZENITH , and no one was disappointed in the outstanding performance she made under Joe Gibbs ’ capable guidance in the Open Mare Class . TRAVELIN ’ MAN , owned by Randall Hicks of Alexandria , Virginia and ridden by Everett Majors , walked his way to the blue in the best class of Junior Horses we ’ ve seen assembled this year . The Junior
Walking Horse Stake proved to be the highlight of the Saturday night show . Spectators were on top of trucks
and cars and standing ten deep on the ringside . This exciting class was won by Dick Myers on JIM DAN DY ’ S GO BOY . Dick made an outstanding show in this class and the crowd seemed pleased writh the results . The Amateur Championship Stake was the largest and best class of Amateurs assembled in Virginia , with 22 entries . C . W . Kline of Boyerstown , Pa . on HAP ’ S SENSATION was the proud winner in this fine class . Tying right behind Mr . Kline was Mary Weinstock on MARY ’ S FASHION LADY . The Championship Stake , Friday and Saturday nights , was won by GREY SUN with trainer Joe Gibbs in the saddle . This fine aged stud performed in three distinct gaits and many felt he was working better than ever . Broadway , always the greatest show in Virginia , jived up to its reputation as " The Little Celebration
