ELMORE BROCK STABLES
We hear that everything has about settled down at Elmore ’ s barn since the Celebration . After winning a Two-Year-Old Stud Class and the Two-Year-Old Championship on DOUBLE DELIGHT and tying reserve in both the Age Stallion Class and the Stake on MR . GLO , Mr . Brock deserves a break in the routine . Speaking of " breaks ,” it appears that we didn ’ t give him much of a break in our coverage of his great showing with MR . GLO in our Celebration issue . We have always liked this bay stud and will agree with the many people who feel that he made a fine showing at the Celebration to become the 1967 Reserve World Grand Champion . If you are ever in the vicinity of Sparta , go by to see Elmore . He has some of the best stock in the country .
CLAUDE BROWN STABLES
There is a new man in the saddle at Claude Brown Stables in Morehead , Kentucky . Claude has recently acquired the services of Mr . Bill Bailey , a young trainer from Tennessee who made a good name for himself this past season . We are sure that Bill will do a fine job for Mr . Brown , and are also sure that Claude can teach him a " thing or two ” about the horse business . They should make a fine team .
SUGARLOAF FARMS
A major change has recently been undertaken by Mr . Randall Rollins , owner of Sugarloaf Farms in Odessa , Delaware . Mr . Rollins has recently moved all of his stock to new quarters in Atlanta . Trainer Tommy Howell , who has had an excellent year both in the north and in the south , went directly to their Georgia facilities after the Celebration . They are in the process of acquiring property for a new stable and , in the meantime , are leasing stables in the Atlanta area . Watch for Tommy on ETERNAL SUN and EBONY ’ S PRINCESS , and young Ricky Rollins on MERRY BLUE BOY . They will probably make several more shows before the year ends .
BROWN STABLES
Mr . W . L . Brown recently announced that Johnny Cabe has taken over as head trainer at the Brown Brothers Stables , Signal Mountain , Tennessee . Johnny , who has worked with some of the best including Wink Groover , Buddy Hugh and Vic Thompson , replaces Bill Bailey as trainer here . With about ten horses now in training and some real fine young stock coming in , Johnny should have his hands full during the winter .
JIM BABB STABLES
A brief follow-up on the impending vacancy of Battleground Stables in Fort Oglethorpe , Georgia pro duced the information that Mr . Jim Babb will open
his own training operation there about the middle of November . Jim is currently training at the Blue Ridge Ranch in Whitmore , California . He is considered
to be one of the top trainers in the business and his success over the past few years indicates this very
well .
Jim figures that he is " coming home ,” as he is from Dalton , Georgia originally . As a professional trainer he has been in business in various parts of the country , but always planned to return to his home territory at some time .
He and his wife Diana will operate their own stables with both of them working and showing horses . Diana is an excellent rider and plans to focus her attention on Amateurs and Juveniles , and Equitation lessons . They have experienced considerable success in all areas of their horse acticity and will certainly add a lot to the Walking Horse business in the tri-state area of Tennessee , Georgia and Alabama . At present they have a growing list of horses scheduled for training and expect a full house by the first of the year .
Mr . and Mrs . L . O . Ledford , owners of Battleground Stables , state that they are very pleased to have a man of the calibre of Mr . Babb take over their facilities . They extend a personal invitation to everyone to visit with Jim and Diana at any time .
STALEY FARMS
Mr . Bill Staley and his wife , Dr . Linda Staley , are off and running with their Walking Horse operation under the capable management of Mr . Bill Moore . Bill has been training successfully for quite a few years and is best remembered for his work with Lone Star Stables in Nacogdoches , Texas . Bill came to Lewisburg , Tennessee to take over Staley Stables only a few months ago and already has made great progress . SHADOW ’ S HOT SHOT , ridden by Dr . Staley , is coming on strong and several horses owned by Mr . L . Frank Roper of Winter Garden , Florida are also doing well . When the gate opens in the spring you can bet that
Bill Moore will be ready to go .
LEANN McCLUEN INJURED AT CHATSWORTH SHOW
A late news item relates that Miss LeAnn McCluen , daughter of Judge Lloyd McCluen of Rockwood , Tennessee , was injured severely when she was kicked in the abdomen at the recent Chatsworth , Georgia horse show . The attractive seventeen-year-old blond was putting a tail brace on her amateur horse when the mare suddenly swung away and kicked with both hind feet , knocking LeAnn to the ground . She was taken to the Chatsworth hospital and then was rushed to Dalton General Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery . A report from Mrs . McCluen indicated that she was still in the intensive care unit , but was recovering as well as could be expected .
