Etowah Civitan Horse Show Tops East Tennessee Early Shows The annual Etowah, Tennessee Civitan Horse Show, commonly known as the “Wink Groover show,” got the East Tennessee Shows off to a roaring start May 6th. Rain threatened all day and dampened the surrounding countryside without touching the showgrounds at the Englewood Center. Somebody has been living right! Wink and Fay Groover work long and hard on this project. Mr. Groover is a member of the local Civitan Club and is manager of their show. This was their fifth effort and a good one it was. Judge Clyde Orton of Caruthersville, Missouri, a previous Celebration Judge, did the honors in the ring and tied the twelve Walking Horse Classes with precision and determination. There were quite a few highlights in this show but the final workout, which included both JOHNNY MID NIGHT and MACK K’S BIG STORY, was the grand finale. Mack Motes, who has been taking on all comers with the much discussed “Johnny,” had his hands full as ring-wise Buddy Hugh made his bid on the big golden sorrel. It was a great workout and it could have gone either way with the approval of the spectators. It was a good one-night horse show with some top horses and trainers gracing the activity. Whenever Etowah, Tennessee, can draw trainers such as Bill Bailey, Vic Thompson, Joe & Judy Martin. Billy Brantley, Horace Young, Bob Cherry, Buddy Hugh, Frank Register, Buddy Moore, J. V. Clayton, John Price, Mack Motes, Mike Janeway, Roy Starkey and James Trice . . . there is some show in the making. Complete results reported elsewhere in this issue.
