Kansas City before he moved to take over this new barn .
Ray has a sixteen stall show stable and has about every stall filled with working stock . He is particularly proud of SHADOW ’ S SHADOW , a top black stud that won him twenty-one blues last year and as a three year old . This horse is owned by Harry Hodgins of Kansas City and should be a winner in any competition in 1967 . Ray is also pleased with a Junior Mare owned by A . A . Rieke of Shawnee Mission , Kansas . This marc carried home eighteen blues last year and will be ready for Junior classes this year .
A crop of good two year olds is headed by DANNY GO MAN GO . a fine sorrel stud owned by Huton and Murphy and a black MIDNIGHT SECRET colt named SECRET SON R . B . that is owned by Buck Henson of Kansas City .
This new stable and the hundred and eighty acres surrounding it is owned by Mr . W . W . Hutton of Lenexa , Kansas , who also has some fine horses in the making . We will look forward to more news from the new Ray Green Stables .
Mississippi Trainer Weds Florida Beauty
We know that it is not proper to mention the man first in a wedding announcement , but “ this is the horse business ”. Ronnie Spears , well known young trainer for the Circle R Stahles in West Point , Mississippi , was recently married to the former Linda Pendarvis of Jacksonville , Florida . Linda , a beautiful addition to the Walking Horse business , is the daughter of Mr . and Mrs . C . R . Pendarvis , also of Jacksonville . The couple was married in Orlando , on December 16th and make their home in West Point where Ronnie is the trainer for Pete and K . D . Robinson . We want to welcome Linda to the ranks of the Walking Horse “ stable widows ” and know that she will be a difinite asset to Mr . Spears and his training activities . Congratulations and best wishes to you both !
GLL Farms
One of the most discussed Walking Horse operations is the GLL Farms in Collierville , Tennessee . Perhaps the most elaborate facility in the horse world , the GLL Farms is managed by Mr . C . A . “ Charlie ” Bobo and is owned
by Mr . George Lee Lenox . “ Bobo ” ... as he is known to his many friends , is
working thirty two horses at the present . He has a work crew going strong from 6:00 A . M . daily ( we know — we were there ) and its takes a long day to work them all . When . Charlie says that a colt is the “ best I have ever had ” he is saying a lot . That is what he says about a black two year old stud that they purchased from Willis Brown at the Murray Farm Sale . We saw this colt work and he is a natural walking “ something ”. Charlie won the Two Year Old Stud Class last year on RISING SUN and if people arc not careful , he may get that last notch with this one .
Going down the list , Charlie mentioned many horses with pride . He has a filly by MACK K ’ S REFLECTION out of a MIDNIGHT SUN mare that is doing well . He also has a filly by the same stud that is out of a full sister to COLLEGE BOY . She is a good one . Also in the 2 year old bracket is a fine black roan filly owned by Hayes and Dougan of Charleston , Mississippi .
The big conversation piece around the stable is SIR EBONY . This is a superb black stallion that Mr . GLL himself worked with as a colt . Fie was started late under saddle and Mr . Lenox also did a large part of the riding .
SIR EBONY recently won the 3 year old class at Fort Worth and gave the boys something to talk about . He is toD horse and could crowd a lot of people this year . a I ° P , r-ocvxTV A / 1 AfsTF . R PTF . OF . '
RISING SUN , already a well known horse , is doing well as a 3 year old . He is now owned by Bill Tomlinson of N . Wilksboro , N . C ., and should again be a big threat this year . He also owns a black 3 year old mare that
is a good colt .
Dr R . R- Renfro of Fayetteville , N . C . sent Charlie a junior Horse named GEORGE that is “ real george ”. They say he is something special and could shake things up this year . Charlie Corley of Tulsa , Oklahoma , owns two fine junior Horses that are in training at GLL .
In the Age Classes “ Bobo ” will be going strong with MISS SUNDOWN R , a top Chestnut mare owned by Dr . Renfro . TROUBLE IN THE HILLS is doing well and should be a strong contender for stake class honors by Spring . He is owned by Dr . Turner Bynum of Oklahoma City . Also , BOMB ’ S ESCAPADE , owned by Hayes and Dougan , will be shown in age stud classes . He is a fancy chestnut stallion that should come along well . Mr . William McGinnes of Tampa , Florida , has a Junior gelding in training and Brad Thomas of Pilot Mountain , N . C ., has an aged gelding .
Amateurs wearing the GLL colors this year will be Miss Mary Laidlaw riding SHADOW ’ S DARK LADY plus several fine Juvenile riders .
GLL is standing CARBON COPY , SUN ’ S GUN- SMOKE and MIKES MIGHTY MAN for the 1967 season . The response to this lineup of top breeding stock has been excellent and Farm Manager Joe Johnson is getting geared up for the biggest year yet .
Russell Pate Stables
Working hard on a line-up of top 2 year olds , RUS SELL PATE , winner of the 2 year old Championship last year on EBONY ’ S OLD CROW , is aiming high again this year . He has about the best 2 year olds we have seen . One , a big black EBONY stallion is really outstanding . He is owned by Billy Hale and is a full brother to EBONY ’ S BLACK LADY . Not to be outdone however , is a black colt owned by D . D . Dickey of Covington . He too , is a good one . Dr . Bob Ratton of Memphis , has a good colt that is a full brother to SUPERB MASTERPIECE and Dr . Ralph E . Baney has a fine EBONY stud colt that is “ walking a hole in the ground ”. Gene Davis of Louisville , Georgia , has a bay colt that is actually further along than any of the others . He responded early to training and is about ready to show now . Lie is a good colt .
EBONY ’ S SKY PILOT , a good three year old stud owned by Fred Fowler is about to reach the top . He did well last year and should really come along this year . In the Age horse category , Russell will be working with a fine age mare owned by Will C . Terry . He will also have SHADRACK , a big-time stud that already has a reputation as a top horse . J . D . Faulkner of Kennett , Mo ., owns him and we understand that Russell will succumb to the damands of a lot of people and breed him to some select marcs this year .
Amateur and Juveniles are abundant at this barn and Bobby Ratton will again be making the rounds on MER RY MOTION MAKER , the “ mile a minute ” bay gelding that he showed last year , while the Senior Bob Ratton will be taking on all comers with OUR SHADOW , which
