1966 WORLD CHAMPIONS STILL BATTLING FOR HONORS AGAINST TOP COMPETITION
To win the World Championship takes a maximum effort on the part of trainer and horse . In some instances this peak effort can drain a horse of bright potential and . severely limit his future success in the show ring . But apparently this is not true of the 1966 World Champions as almost all of these horses are still very prominently mentioned in talk of the top contenders for the 1967 Celebration .
Last year the VOICE took a look at the happenings of the year after victor \ r for each champion in 1965 to see just what had happened to the horse . This proved very popular with our readers and we are repeating this feature for your enjoyment .
The most appropriate place to start is with the reigning World Grand Champion , SHAKER ’ S SHOCKER , and Betty Sain . SHOCKER is one of the prime favorites in “ barn talk ” circles even though no one seems to know for sure whether or not Betty will bring the big stud back for a second effort . As a matter of fact , Betty has remained very noncommittal as to the show plans for her horse and it looks like we will have to wait until the last minute to know just what the 1966 winner will do in 1967 .
Last year ’ s Junior Champion has been anything but noncommittal as to his 1967 plans . Bovd Hudgins and MAN OF RHYTHM are out to win the World Grand Championship in 1967 . Boyd has shown his horse a number of times with very specific aims in mind . Apparently these have all been realized as Boyd is very pleased with his horse ’ s progress .
The showing by RHYTHM at the Macon Horse Show was of championship calibre to say the least . Many observers have dismissed this horse ’ s chances but it will take a perfect show to beat him and even that may not be enough .
In the three-year-old class in 3966 some of the top horses on the Celebration grounds were to be found . The champion of this highly competitive division is THE ENTERTAINER and popular trainer Joe Webb . Joe and his horse are taking careful aim at the four-year-old or junior crown for 1967 . Joe has ridden many previous champions and the sparkle in his eye lets you know that he feels he is riding another one . And let ’ s not forget that Betty Sain won the World Championship last year on a four-year-old and this must certainly be on Joe ’ s mind . If the events of Celebration week open the prospects of a Grand Championship , do
surprised to find Joe Webb an ENTERTAINER battling the best in
the big stake .
The two-year-old champion in 1966 was EBONY ’ S OLD CROW with
Russell Pate doing the riding . ULAJ CROW has a new trainer this year and he continues to make excellen
progress in his march toward greatness Donald Paschal is now teaming OLD CROW and he is staking claim on the three-year-old title . The horse
has taken to the canter very well and this combined with his fine flat wa and running walk make him a very formidable threat to say the least .
The 1966 Owner-Amateur champion , MOON GLOW JR . and Burt
Daugette are still around this year and are favorites to capture this title again in 1967 . Burt and this horse make
a talented combination that will prove difficult to unseat this year . The horse is in training at the Vic Thompson Stables in Shelbyville which is widely

Another 1966 champion from th Vic Thompson Stables who will K back to defend her title in 1967 is Tudf
Tillett and THE UNTOUCHABLE Judy will be meeting plenty of compe ’ tition this year as the favorite gives the rest of the division something to shoot at . Judy and her fine horse are ring wise and have been challenged many times before and she should prove just as difficult as ever to beat . Judy and her horse have been shown a number of times this year and should enter the big ring ready and willing to g0 .
The World Champion pony in 1965 and 1966 was LITTLE BIT O ’ TROUBLE with talented Ray Beech doing the ridnig . Ray had not shown his pony as of this writing and is not quite sure as to what he will do . If Ray wins this year he could retire the challenge trophy in the pony class for his three successive wins . Don ’ t be surprised if he brings his great pony back but don ’ t set your heart on it . Even Ray is not betting one way or the other .
Castleberry is a graduate of the University of the South and worked for the Tennessee Electric Power Co . from 1934 to 1939 , and for the Shelbyville Power , Water and Sewer System from 1939 to 1967 . He has worked with the National Celebration since 1939 in accounting and as ticket sales chairman , and he will continue in this work .
