MY FIRST YEAR AT JOE WEBB ’ S RIDING CAMP
By Wesley Spencer ( As Dictated to His Mother )
I think this is a very good camp for boys and girls to go to . It is very religious and educational for boys and girls . It was a very important takeplace in my life and I hope it is one in yours .
I think one of the fun-est days at camp are rainy days . On these days you can play cards in the cabin , be down at the bam or at the chowhouse playing games . On hot days a man will come to your cabin and will give you a choice of what you want to do at certain times . Between these two times you go swimming in a lake that is very cool on a hot day . If you want to you can go fishing in the lake .
When you drive to the camp on the “ old road ” there will be a sign greeting you as you drive up . You go to an office and register , then a counselor will show you to a cabin where you ’ ll be staying and let you pick your bunk .
The boys ’ counselors this year were Joe Sloan and Dennis Martin . There were twelve boys and fifty-somethinggirls . We had campers from around 21 states , including Alaska , New York , New Jersey and Virginia .

Every other day you can go trail riding if you want . The last day the trail ride is the longest and best . They teach you how to ride . Every day you ride Walking Horses . You are split up into three groups . This year , Group 2 rode first , Group 1 rode second and Group 3 rode third . At the end of the session they have a horse show with every one of the campers in it . Everyone gets a picture of Joe Webb , ROD GERS PERFECTION , and CAR BON COPY with a goodbye note on the back . The judges this year were two of Joe ’ s helpers . They have first place which is $ 5.00 and Most Improved Rider which is $ 2.00 . They divide classes by the ages . CRACKER- JACK is my favorite horse , but he is not the best horse in the bam , but he is the gentlest .
There is a craft house which is the Old House dedicated to Joe ’ s Grandfather s Grandfather for the camp . I hey built a Memorial Pond this past E ', 1 !,* “> memory of Miles Mitchell Webb , known as Mike . Toe Webbs Grandfather ’ s Grandfather ’ s 5 "*, name w * s Miles . Joe ’ s Grandfather-s first name was Miles , Toe ’ s brother s first name is Miles ' and
ike S first name was Miles . That ’ s symcamp is named CamP ^iles
Near the end of the session , all the cabins , boys and girls have a talent show . This year , Joe Webb dressed up as Little Red Rider Hood and wanted to join the camp . And Mrs . Webb dressed up as Phyllis Diller . I think that they both are very good sports to do a thing like this .
Mr . Jerry Motes was a very nice man and he helped with everything at camp . On the night before the horse show all the girls and boys sneak up on each other and have water raids with buckets or cups of water . We all have a lot of fun . At night the beds are very hard , but you are so sleepy that they feel like feathers . Also at night you have a devotional and at night when we were going to sleep we all have fun giggling and laughing at each other . The cooks are good ones and they all make delicious food and
they feed you well with seconds and
thirds . It was very interesting to Joe Web
work THE ENTERTAINER . He is a real good horse .
Some of the boys names were Mi ' Griffin , Mike Goulette , Steve Me- Curry , Steve Clason , Winkie Groove * Hal , Bruce , Kevin Webb , Howar
Bob , Len , Jimmy . _ 0 I think boys and girls ought c > B
to this camp until they are eI £' and then I would like to be a coU , j lor . I ’ m going back next yeai ‘ ^aCj hope I have as good a time as this year .
