WEST COAST ‘ WALKS ON ’
By Connie Keefer 2749 S . Native Ave . Rowland Heights , Calif .
Once again we are traveling on the West Coast Show Circuit and find that Del Mar is the location of the San Diego County Fair and Twenty-Second Annual Southern California Exposition National Hone Show . Located practically on the ocean front and surrounded by the hills dotted with Torrey Pines , Del Mar offered a picturesque setting for this major horse show that started June 23 and continued through July 4 . I had the pleasure to meet Mr . Eric W . L . Atterbury , Horse Show Manager , and other officials , and greatly appreciated their assistance . The judge , Mr . Howard Dickey of Lexington , Kentucky , had a hard task to perform , and with the assistance of the able Ring Master , Ralph Walker , Announcer , Robert Mairs and other officials , everything went very smoothly . The show was operated in accordance with the current rules of the American Horse Shows Association and was classified as an “ A ” show in the Walking Horse Division . This allows the exhibitors to receive triple points toward the A . H . S . A . High Score Awards .

Each show started with the presentation of the Colors by a mounted U . S . Marine Corps Color Band , which is the only known one . While the classes were being judged we enjoyed the organ music provided by Miss Pat Gresham . The show was a success , with the classes filled as well as the stands , and the enthusiastic crowd leaving standing room only . The action started for the Walking Horse Division when the Juvenile to Ride class was called into the ring , and Nancy Molay on the award winning MR . SUCCESSOR owned by Mr . and Mrs . S . James Molay won the first blue ribbon . SHAD OWS DREAMTIME G and Ray Rhoads riding for Sunderland Farms won the Walking Horse Junior Threeyear-olds with a fine showing from start to finish . The Mare class made the crowd sit up and take notice as the team of Glenn Miller and SUNBEAM ’ S PRODUCER for Blue Ridge Ranch proved to be too much and carried off the top honors once again . With competitive entries in the Stallion-Gelding class , Bob Campbell on PURE GOLD captured the blue ribbon for Evergreen Ranch . Coming in for a close second was STATELY AGAIN , a flashy moving roan with Bill Oakford riding for Mrs . Carolyn Hawley . In the Gentlemen to Ride event , Ray Rhoads guided the handsome CRUSADER ’ S STAR to victory for the happy owners , Mr . and Mrs . W . Mussman . The Amateur to Ride class was undoubtedly one of the most exciting classes of this division . With an almost packed ring Dr . Carl Bishop rode his impressive MID NIGHT GLORY B to the top spot . Harold Pyron continued to make a good show on his young chestnut stallion SUN ’ S DRIFTWOOD and drew the second ribbon , with the third going to Mrs . Carolyn Hawley on her pretty mare , DESTINY ’ S FANCY LADY . The Ladies to Ride class was another crowd pleaser as the consistent winner MY LITTLE MARGIE with owner Jean Mc- Burney took another first to add to their collection . Shadowing her all the way and tying second was Mary Evans on HALLIE ’ S GO BOY for John P . Evans Clothiers . Having an almost repeat of an earlier class , number 780 , PURE GOLD with the capable Bob Campbell at the reins for Evergreen Ranch put on another good performance to win the blue . STATELY AGAIN and Bill Oakford came in for another close second , with APRIL PRIN CESS and Glenn Miller tying third in this close knit class . The Parker Shaw Memorial Perpetual Trophy for Hi- Point Walking Horse of Show winner was no surprise as PURE GOLD and Bob Campbell accepted this award for the proud owners Dr . and Mrs . Carl Bishop of Evergreen Ranch . Check the Horse Show Results in the back of this section for all results .
During the week a Tennessee Walking Horse Exhibitors Association luncheon meeting was held with several
members and guests attending . There were several topics discussed as President Florence Bishop pushed on to accomplish a great deal . There was also an Exhibitors Party held at the Turf Club atop the grandstands of the race
track given by the Del Mar National Horse Show which offered buffet dining and dancing . The party was a success with several HIGHLIGHTS and a few unforgettable dancing exhibitions . Everyone is looking forward to oui next major show at Santa Barbara , California , as the West Coast ‘ Walks On ’.
