class he has two geldings. In the three-year- old ses Wink is well supplied with three studs, one ing’and five mares. I saw a bay three-year-old8^ which is walking all the way and should prov> right to a share of the money. Wink’s four-yearhi horses consist of one mare two studs and one Elc ing. In the aged classes, Wink will have one six studs and three geldings. So you can see e the van rolls from Groover Stables it will be full everybody better watch out ’cause each horse EAST TENNESSEE We took a trip to New Taswell to see Mr. BILL GIBSON, who is trainer at Venable Stables. Bill is one of the nicest and most capable young trainers in the horse business. He has that "special some thing” in working his horses that is lacking so often. I think people are overlooking a real good young trainer. At the present Bill is working a real nice two-year-old filly by Midnight Sun Glow 0, owned by Mr. ROBERT LANE. A five-year-old mare by Mid night Gold Dream, and owned by Mr. E. C. NICHOLS of Knoxville, has come a long way and should give some real competition in the mare classes. Bill has two four-year-old studs: one, a chestnut, is owned by JUNIOR VENABLE; and the other, a sorrel is owned by PAUL HARROL. Both are working good. The real jewel of the barn is a three-year-old mare by Sun Dust owned by Junior Venable. She is a picture, still or in action. Top junior mares like this one are hard to find and she is truly a top one. If you are ever through Taswell, stop in and see some real nice horses. On up the road, in Greenville, Tennessee, FRANK REGISTER is busy as trainer in the BEN HASHE Stable. Frank is so friendly you feel like you have known him all your life. Frank is working nine two- year-olds. He has three two-year-old studs, one owned by HASHE and JONES, one by WALTER HAWKINS, and one by KENNY and DUCKWORTH. They are all nice with lots of promise. A two-year-old Mack K filly owned by Dr. J. R. PIERCE is coming along real nice. In the three-year-old class, Frank will be showing a black stud owned by RUSS BALES, a Black Story filly and a bay June Sun stud, both owned by Ben Hashe. Two four-year-olds, Major Roddy and The Poli tician, are doing very welL Frank’s aged horses con sist of Lady Bird, a mare; and Merry’s Merry Sun, a gelding, both owned by Ben Hashe. On .a very wet, gray day, I walked into WINK GROOVER’S bam. After being there, things looked a lot brighter. Out of the thirty-four head Wink is working, he rode some real nice horses for me. Just when you thought he had shown you his best he would bring out one a little better. Due to the fact that we couldn’t possibly put the names and owners of thirty- four horses in this column, Wink suggested leaving the names out so nobody’s feeling would be hurt if their horses weren’t named. Wink really has his hands full He has two two-year-old studs, a bay and a roan and both know how to walk. Also in the two-year-old OUT OF THE NORTH By Arlene Eklund 16611 Gaynelle Road Tinley Park, Illinois (312) 532-3555 This has been the month for making new acquaint ances and losing old friends. I received a very de moralizing phone call a couple of weeks ago from Mrs. VERA STULLER. She informed me of the unfor tunate and sudden death of her husband, HUGH, who had had a history of coronary difficulty. Mr. Stuller, a well-known Walking Horse enthusiast in this region, served on the board of the Midwest Horse Show for a number of years. His position on the board has been succeeded by his son, HAROLD, the popular and talented exhibitor of Serenade in Blue. As Mrs. Stuller said of Hugh, and I think it is an extremely appropriate epitaph, "He loved people and he loved horses.” We shall all miss him, and I’m sure that the rest of the Walking Horse world will join me j in expressing our deepest sympathy to Vera and Harold on the passing of Hugh Stuller, horseman. On the brighter side, JOHN ERB of Naperville phoned to tell me about his roan Walking Horse, ; Lightning Jane. Jane, a twenty-two-year-old Hunters Allen mare, has a yearling stud colt, Erb’s Golden Allen, sired by Leisure Run Allen Mack, and is in foal agai
