WISCONSIN WALKS
BUDDY ' HUGH is working quite a few good horses , as usual , that seem to be coming along fast . He has a beautiful little black Perfection mare of Mrs . JEAN WOLF ’ S that is as sleek as can be , has a fine flat walk and a beautiful canter , and is doing better every day with the running walk . Mrs . Wolf is from Oconomowoc , Wisconsin . Buddy ’ s bam is nearing completion , and should be one of the nicest around .
We visited the J . T . LEECH barn at Winchester for the first time , and what a lovely and picturesque spot they have . It ’ s a setting that looks like a painting . He worked all four of the JAMES TOLBERT ’ s horses , and how these horses are coming along ! We saw7 the pretty7 roan Souvenir mare that has improved fabulously ; a black Midnight Sun coming three-yearold that is pretty7 as can be , and really can go ; and the great Midnight Queen Bee who looks better that ever ; but most fabulous of all is the sorrel two-yearold Midnight Sun stud , Sun ’ s Creator ( known before as Pride of Midnight ), w7ho has two outstanding gaits , and is the one to watch for . He looks like he can take them all . . . and will be one of the great ones . It wras a treat to see him work .
Our Walking Horse personalities for this month are the PHILIP KREUGER family of Mequon , Wisconsin . They are relatively new Walking Horse owners , having purchased their first one about a year ago , and Mr . Kreuger ended his first season of showing most successfully .
Their horse background and eventual acquisition of a Walking Horse is an interesting tale : as has been heard before , an active interest in horses ( or any hobby or sport ) is one of the best antidotes to juvenile boredom ( one of the fore-runners of juvenile delinquency ). The Kreugers , JOYCE and PHIL , decided this was the best method of luring their oldest son away from TV , so in 1962 decided to purchase a horse . It ended up to be two horses ( a Welsh pony in foal , and a pleasure horse since converted to a w7alk-trot pony ), and eventually , by the summer of ’ 64 , six — a variety of pleasure horses .
The Kreugers have four children ; PHIL , 14 ; LINDA , 11 ; JEFF , 7 ; and STEVE , 6 . Their walk-trot mare w7as put in training at the Nancy Lynn Stables in Grafton , Wisconsin . In September of 1964 Linda rode in the Tripoli show at Joy Farm and saw a demonstration of the Tennessee Walking Horse . As Mr . Kreuger says , " A loud holdout , my days were , at that show , unknowingly numbered .” In early 1965 MARY LYNN TREIS , owner and trainer of Nancy Lynn Stables , tried to find a Walker for Phil Kreuger , and by the end of April Dictator Again was purchased for him . By the middle of May , he says , " I was in the ring at the Madison ( Wisconsin ) show and have loved every minute since . In the meantime , Linda wanted to try equitation ,

At almost the same time , another mare was added to the Kreuger string : a bay , Countess Valentine , for Joyce , who will show her in walk-trot events this year .
Phil Kreuger and Dictator have improved steadily throughout the past show season , each time getting more with each other and putting on a better and better show . This pair finished up as Amateur Reserve Champion of 1965 in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois . Again quoting , " My first year was more than could be expected . Dictator and I look forward to next year . Joyce and Countess Valentine are acquiring experience and poise together . Linda and Dream Doll take aim at the 12-and-under equitation . Jeff hopes to start showing occasionally in equitation and loves to ride . Steve cheers us all ( but gets bored too easily ), and Phil prefers being a stableboy and follows the group with his pitchfork and basket . We are , as you can see , a varied family !”
They are also , as you can see , a very lovely family , with a great interest in horses , and we are glad to welcome them into the Walking Horse world . The Kreugers are members of the Wisconsin Walking Horse Association , Phil is a new member of the Board , and we know their interest and abilities will add much to the growth of Walking Horses in Wisconsin .
If any of you Wisconsin or Northern Illinois people have any news , be sure to send it to me at River Tree Farm , Ixonia , Wisconsin 53036 . We ’ ll be glad to hear from you !
