prised to find a short article about him and his horse. There was a good write-up about his new stable and the shows that he had won. He read it aloud to those in his office. "Listen to this,” he said. "Middle Ten nessee had better take notice of a young trainer by the name of Lonny Barnes. This newcomer to the big-time has opened some eyes with his performan ces on a bay two-year-old stud, Tiger Bay.” The article went on to tell about his winning and about the sale of the colt. "How do you suppose they find out all the details for these stories?” he wondered. "I know I never told them all this.” Everything was progressing smoothly until, one day in early August, Lonny was busy helping to unload a truckload of hay and Little Joe came running up, yelling, "Lonny Barnes, you better come quick. Your bay colt is down and can’t get up.” Lonny jumped off the back of the truck and ran to the stall where the bay colt was. Sure enough, he was down! "Get up from there, horse,” he said. The colt tried to get up but could only make a feeble attempt to raise his head. Lonny knelt down beside him and put his ear to the horse’s stomach. "Oh, boy . . . just what we need: a good case of the colic!” Little Joe was instructed to stay with him as Lonny hurried to the phone to call the vet. "Is Doctor Pratt in?” he asked. "Well, where is he? I’ve got a good horse down wi th what looks like the colic and I need him bad.” Lon ny hung up with the knowledge that the vet would call as soon as he could be reached. About that time Little Joe yelled, "Lonny, you better do somethin’ quick . . . dis horse is hurtin’ bad!” (To be continued) FOR SALE ATTENTION TRAINERS!!
