ELMORE BROCK STABLES
For the past month , the Walking Horse Stables of Mr . ELMORE BROCK in Sparta , Tennessee , have been a virtual beehive of activity . The principal reason for all the interest and talk was the progress of a three-year-old stud colt by Midnight Sun that Elmore had been working for LARRY GRIBBLE and the LOWE brothers of McMinnville . They had purchased this outstanding black horse from DIXIE WEAVER of Tuscaloosa , Alabama , some few months ago and had moved him to Sparta for Elmore to work . A late report has it that Elmore did such a good job of training that the price on the horse went to a top figure and he was sold to a Memphis doctor , and is now in STEVE HILL ’ s care in Beech Grove , Tennessee . Good job , " Possum ”!
Elmore is currently working about twenty-five head and , as usual , has some good stock . He has a reputation of showing stock that — " horse for horse ” — is about as good as anyone can put in the show ring . Mr . Glo , a four-year-old bay stallion owned by TUTT METCALF , is doing very well . He will be a stake horse contender this season . The much-talked-about Deep Velvet has reached a peak of growth and is doing exceptionally well . She could be one of the best mares out this season . Elmore is working about ten two-year-olds and , with Amateurs and Juveniles such as SUSIE HUNTER , LEE WOOD and TUTT MET CALF , should create some real competition . The Elmore Brock Stables boasts one of the finest breeding studs around with Midnight Sun Glo O , a black stallion that is really getting some fine colts . Elmore raised this horse and is pleased to see him rise to the top as a sire .
KEN DAUGHTREY STABLES
EDITOR ' S NOTE : We received a letter from trainer JERRY WOODLEE , who outlined his current activities for us . His letter is as follows :
" As you know , I have taken over training at the Ken Daughtrey Stables in Seminary , Mississippi . I rented the bam here and took over the first of the year . We have some good stock , I think — of course we won ’ t know until the gates open this spring . " I am working 16 head , among which I have a real good coming three-year-old , Piddley ’ s Midnight . He is a horse that belongs with the good ones . He is jet-black with a spot on the forehead and two white socks behind . He is the kind of horse that everyone likes to have — a natural one . He is by Piddley out of a Midnight Sun mare . My blacksmith , Mr . BILL CARTER of Laurel , Mississippi , owns him . " I have two horses for Mr . and Mrs . JACK EVER- ETTE of Hattiesburg . One is a real good two-yearold Pride of Panola filly and the other is a Sundustbred three-year-old gelding which their daughter , JACKIE , will show in the juvenile classes .
" Mr . and Mrs . PAUL M . RAY BORNE have three horses in training . One is a two-year-old stud , another is a goming four-year-old mare , and the third is a real good coming three-year-old black filly .
" Mr . and Mrs . W . C . CLARK and son MIKE own a real nice two-year-old black filly that is doing real well . She is a Go Boy-bred filly .

" I have a White Silver Sultan stud colt that I have just broken . He seems as if he is making a pretty good kind of a colt . He is owned by Mr . ODOM of Laurel , Mississippi .
" Mr . and Mrs . J . W . WOLFE own a chestnut sorrel five-year-old , Sultan ’ s Copper King , that people around here won ’ t forget as a three-year-old a couple of years back . He wasn ’ t shown last year , but will be busting the gates this spring .
" Mr . and Mrs . W . W . WOLFE and daughter DEBBIE own an aged gelding which Debbie shows in juvenile classes . By the way , this horse is for sale , as Debbie plans on getting another horse .
" Mr . and Mrs . GRADDY BAGGETT of Pascagoula , Mississippi , own an aged mare .
" Mr . Bill Carter also owns a really outstanding aged mare . She is a Pride of Panola-bred mare that has been shown by amateurs and would make a good juvenile mare . She is also for sale .
" Mr . JEFF SPEED owns an Amateur gelding that is for sale . Mr . Speed won several ribbons with him this past season . " I also have a two-year-old Mack K colt and a Midnight Sun three-year-old . Last , but certainly not least , I have both of Mr . GRANTHAM ’ S aged mares which are fat and full of zip after a good winter ’ s rest . We expect another good season with both of them . Last year Rebel ’ s Red Angel won over 40 ribbons , the last of which was won at the Celebration in the Amateur Mare class .”

I had a very nice letter from Mr . HOLMES of Walking " H ” Farm in Chardon , Ohio . They have a bam full of horses . HEATHER is busy working Mr . Masterful and Red Warrior and three two-year-olds , plus all the activities of a senior in high school . GEORGE , JR ., is working Mr . Magic and plans to start showing him at the Columbus show . It sounds like George , Jr ., is the right jockey for this powerful stud , and we had better watch for this pair .
Walking " H ” has a full schedule planned for this season , but the graduation of George , Jr ., from Kenyon College and that of Heather from high school will start the summer with priority . Mr . Holmes has been busy getting nine Walking Horse classes into the new Cleveland National Horse Show , October 1- 8 , by getting sponsors for all but one of those classes . Perhaps we could give some help to Mr . Holmes and Mr . GOCHNEAUR to find a sponsor for the stake classes .
DOROTHY is married but will be showing Dark Glory ’ s Jack and a new flashy junior horse . Just can ’ t get those Walking Horses out of your blood !
I also talked to CHARLIE HAYNES of Mumma Stables in Middletown , and he is looking forward to a successful season . Charlie has a two-year-old filly , Go Boy ’ s Gidget , that he says can really go ! She is a pretty sorrel with a star , and it is no wonder that Mrs . Mumma claims her ! Mr . Mumma ’ s two amateur horses , Sun Dust Defender and Jet ’ s Bounty Hunter , are also working well and will be in their usual winning ways this season .
