SUN ’ S PAYOFF Moves to Harold Wise Stables for Remainder of 1966 Season
A recent telephone call from Dr . N . A . THOMPSON of Eldorado , 111 ., confirmed reports that his outstanding stallion , Sun ’ s Payoff , had been moved to the Harold Wise Stables to stand the remainder of the 1966 season . Dr . Thompson said , " The horse was acutally retired to stud in 1964 . As a show horse he started his winning ways as a three-yearold and during the following four years he won the Amateur and / or Championship Stakes at the Illinois State Fair ; International Livestock Show , Chicago ; Hillsboro . Mo .; Boys ’ Town , Mo .; Paducah , Ky .; Cairo , I1L ; Metropolis , ILL ; Harrisburg , 111 .; Evansville , Ind .; Owensboro , Ky .; Ben ton , Ky .; Carbondale , 111 .; Marion , Ky .; and Ridgway , 111 . " He placed second or third at Charlotte , N . C .; Columbia , Tenn .; Sikeston , Mo .; and American Royal , Kansas City , Mo . " His last year showing , he won sixteen blues and four Championships in the hottest competition . " Payoff was a typical " Saturday Night " show horse — he was always UP for the big one — a fierce competitor . He had many admirers and the following comments were made about him : ' A Personality Horse ,’ ' A Crowd Pleaser ,’ ' Real Showhorse Ways .’ He has that extra something that everyone desires in both man and animal — dash , verve , personality — and he is passing this on to his colts . They are colorful , outstanding performers , yet mild-mannered ."
Mr . HAROLD WISE , who is privileged to be standing the 1965 Celebration winner Triple Threat , this season , says that they are pleased to have a horse of the caliber of Sun ’ s Payoff in Middle Tennessee .
SCRUGGS & BAIER STABLES
In Rutherford , Tennessee , the stable of trainer TED BAIER is off and running toward a successful 1966 season . Young Ted was an active exhibitor last season and has more and better stock this year . Young MICKEY CHERRY and his dad , who is one of Ted ’ s principal supporters , are looking forward to another good year with their stock . Mickey will show Sun ’ s Playboy again after a 23-blue-ribbon season last year . Other Cherry horses are a two-year-old Shadow stud , a black age mare named Bomb ’ s Lightning Ann , and a Junior stud named Go Boy ’ s Bomber .
Other horses now in training with Ted include Mack K ’ s Motion , a roan Junior horse belonging to DEE BUF- FORD of Dyersburg ; a two-year-old Ebony Masterpiece colt owned by TASSO CANTRELL of Greenfield ; Jimmy ’ s Pride , an aged bay gelding owned by EDWARD BUGG ; and a three-year-old bay stud belonging to QUINTON BOYD . The sixteen-stall stable has been remodeled recently and they have a bam full . Their facilities include all the modem conveniences necessary for training top Tennessee Walking Horses .
FAIRWAY WALKING HORSE STABLES
It was a rare privilege to spend some time with our good friend , VERD WALKER of Concord , California , during a recent trip to Searcy , Arkansas . His Fairway Walking Horse Stables are doing much to expand interest in the breed on the West Coast and he personally works hard to create more interest and enthusiasm . At present Verd has two good ’ uns in training with JOE WEBB and had made the trip east to see his stock work when we met him . Merry Lady Belle , a black three-year-old mare , has all the makings of a top horse , and Mark of Perfection , a black three-year-old stud , is also making good progress . We saw Verd ride his horses while we were there and he is no stranger to the saddle .
Back in California , Verd is busy with several good prospects which he has in training with J . D . LAN DERS in Sacramento . On his Fairway Walking Horse Farm he has nineteen good brood mares , seventeen of which are in foal . In discussing his breeding program , Verd said , " We have tried to purchase the best stock we could find that would represent the top blood lines . Among our best mares we have four by Merry Go Boy , two by Midnight Sun , and one by Black Dust . We are standing Major Midnight , and feel that we have about as good blood to offer West Coast Walking Horse enthusiasts as anyone . Major is getting some good colts ."
" SANTA " BRINGS LIVE " ROCKING HORSES "
A note from Walker ’ s Tennessee Walkers , 10300 Calvine Road , Sacramento 23 , California , described a wonderful Christmas present they received , and read as follows :
" A note of thanks to Mr . and Mrs D . E . PHIPPS of Ceres , California , for the opportunity to purchase two of their finest Walking Horses : the aged mare Sorrel Top , by Romeo Allen by Last Chance ; and their beautiful black senior stallion , Blue Midnight , by Blue Namron . Midnight is out of a mare by Sir MauGray . " The Phipps operate a rodeo three days a week and are selling their Walking Horses to make room for bucking horses . ( Ye Gads ! From one extreme to the other — the smoothest to the roughest !) The Phipps and their son RONNIE came by the ranch early Christmas morning to tell us that these two fine horses were going to be sold . We had tried to buy them both early in ' 65 , and again in the fall . I guess Mr . Phipps wanted to play Santa . . . what a joyous Christmas ! And what a compliment to our breeding program .”
McMULLEN BARN BURNS — Located Near Marshall , Indiana
Fire destroyed a large bam on the H . E . McMULLEN farm , about two miles east of Marshall , Indiana , on January 25 .
Most of the horses were in a pasture at the time of the fire , but a two-year-old and a yearling in the bam were led to safety . Included in the loss were 5,000 bushels of corn , 7,000 bales of hay , 700 bales of straw , and several hundred bushels of oats , in addition to saddles , halters , and other pieces of horse equipment . The fire was caused by a tractor with a portable feed grinder which backfired .
