barn storJniftg JOHN PRICE STABLES Always an interesting visit, the JOHN PRICE Stables in Jasper, Tennessee produces some of the finest Walking Horses in this part of the coun try. The feature of this active training and breeding facility Go Boy’s Security, a top rated black stallion that has had a full season for the past two years. He now has some excellent colts on the ground as well as some good age horses that he has sired. Trainer Price and Dr. W. H. ANDERSON of Decatur, Ala bama are partners in this oper ation. In addition to the many fine show horses in Jasper, they have a large band of some ofthe best brood mare stock in’the nation on a farm in Decatur. It is a well-known fact that, to gether, John Price and Dr. An derson make up one of the most knowledgable breeding teams in the Walking Horse business. They can trace blood lines and horses back as far as the breed goes and "know their onions” in this field. We saw severed good horses work and a top two-year-old is a black stallion named Security’s Go Boy owned by Dr. Anderson. This is a cocky show horse stud that is reported to be the best horse that John has ever started. Sundust Glory Boy is a chestnut two-year-old owned by Price and Anderson that is also showing good prospects. BILL TABER of Dalton, Georgia has a top black mare in training here. She is by Go Boy and looks like a winner. John is also working hard with Alabama Born and Sue’s Shad ow, a pair of three-year-olds that were shown last year. Both have taken their canter well and are in excellent shape. My Ebony Star, a black three-year-old stud that was held out last year, is reported to be a top prospect. He is a half-brother to Go Boy’s Crimson Tide, the age stallion that is now in training at WINK GROOVER’S. In the age classes, John will be showing Sun Dust Maid, a big going mare thatwas shown to some top blues last year. She is reported to be in excellent shape and is consider ably better than she was last season. A note of interest is the news that John’s previous Assistant Trainer, MACKEY MOTES, is now full-time trainer for Mr. HOWARD UTTER, Akron, Indi ana. We will have more informa tion on this later. BELL & HOLLAND STABLES DON BELL and TADY HOL LAND are putting in a busy day at their newly-established train ing operation at the Arnold Farms, Winchester, Tennessee. Busy with the various activities of working the twelve horses now in training, both Tady and Don are trying hard to get the stable facilities in good order after be ing empty for over a year. They will soon have the stable full and should be in full swing shortly. At the present, these young trainers are working some good stock, including Jet’s Merry Boy, a chestnut stud owned by RAY BECKLER. This age stallion should be ready to enter the show ring when the gates open for the first spring show. They are also working a Handshaker three-year-old stud colt that shows great promise. One of the best two-year-old fillies we have seen this year is Piddley’s Black Magic, a black owned by JIMMY HANNAH. This little gal is a "natural” and takes that first step like she knows where she is going. Tady has been working her slow and easy, and it is pay ing off. She will be one to watch for! We were also very much impressed with a "green broke” stud colt owned by Ray Beckler. This is a dark roan that has the looks of a true show horse. He is built right, close coupled, with a short back and high neck. If "hunting boogers” and alertness will get the job done, this colt should go a long way as a show horse. M c F arland stables A brief stop at the McFarland Stables in Murfreesboro gave us reason to believe that we will hear a lot from this operation during the 1965 show season. JIMMY McFARLAND and SYL VESTER SHIERKOWSKI, as sisted by WILLIAM SNEED, have twenty head of horses that they are now working, including 12 two-year-olds. In this class, they have several that are show ing good promise including a bay stud owned by FRED JONES, a bay Go Boy filly owned by HEW- IE KING of Murfreesboro, and a black Go Boy filly owned by MAC CARTER. They are also pleased with a Jet Parade stud colt own ed by Jimmy McFarland and VIC THOMPSON. Jimmy is busy working Go Boy’s Space Man, a top rated Junior horse owned by ELVIS LOWE of Christana, Ten nessee and Headshaker, a black age pony owned by Fred Jones of Murfreesboro and HUGH GIL LUM, Westmorland, Tennessee. LEECH STABLES Winding our way through the beautiful country west of Win chester, we found our way to the stables of J. T. and MARIANNE LEECH. Famous as the old home place of Mr. AUBURN GRAY, the Leech Stables boast some of the truly top horses in the nation. There are many outstanding horses stabled here, but the two that have people talking at the present time are Royal Mustang and Miss Majurette. The Mus tang is a junior stud horse that was held out last year for more training. He is rated as a top prospect for 1965 and from what we saw, he is. This horse is a 13
