FEBRUARY, l964 fENHESSEE WALKING H 2 2'RSF GO BOY’S REVENUE, owned bv Floyd Purcell of Orlando has the YOUR ROVING REPORTER By Charles Goldswig Dateline Winter Haven, Florida The Imperial Horse Show held in Winter Haven, Florida,, Jan uary 29 through February 2, with over 60 horses in competition, was a show to be proud of. It was well managed down to the smallest de tail, and the exhibitors and press were entertained royally. Ideal weather added to the enjoyment of the show. Since genial Mrs. Bruce Spencer was on hand to cover the show for the VOICE. I was free to visit all over the place. Bob Christie, of Atlanta, who does those beautiful equestrain por traits, was on hand and hinted he might be coming back this way to do some Walking Horses for Ran dolph Farms. Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Stanley, of Falls Church, Virginia, came by to say “Hello.” Elmo is president of the Northern Virginia Walking Horse Association and owns a nice gelding, SUN DUST JUNIOR. I had a good visit with Billy Brantley, popular trainer of Bat tleground Stables, Fort Ogle thorpe, Georgia. Billy was kept pretty busy with Florida Walking Horse owners who wanted to have their horses trained. There is a de finite shortage of trainers in Florida, and Billy just might find his stable filled to overflowing. Most of the Walking Horse farms and stables in Florida do not take outside horses. Ray Smith came a long way from Rensselaer, Indiana, to show his stallion, SUN DUST FURY, but went home with a winner’s check. Indiana was also represented by Henry Ross of Tipton, Indiana. He is the official farrier for the Sun shine Circuit and knows how to shoe a Walking Horse. Another blacksmith and horseman from In diana making the Circuit is A1 Morgan of LaFayette. I had coffee with Charlie Budd Taylor, a blacksmith from Chilli- cothe, Ohio, who had been visiting Buddy Kirby in Kingsport, Ten nessee, and just thought he would run down and have a look at a few shows in Florida. I got better acquainted with Walier Pierce, of Miami, a fellow trustee of the Florida Walking Horse Association. Walter has been a booster and exhibitor of Walking Horses for many years. I hope Walter decides to get an ama teur card so we can show in some of the classes together. * * * In Florida only one automobile license plate is required, and the Florida Walking Horse Association has had some tags imprinted so that members might have some thing decorative on the front of their automobile and at the same time advertise the Florida Walk ing Horse Association. Other Walk ing Horse people might like to duplicate this idea and make a similar plate suitable for their states. Joe Weaver, of Orlando, Florida, a mere lad of 20 years, gave me the clearest explanation I ever heard of the judging system of the Celebration. This young man works for Preach Fleming, who is the trainer for R. D. Keene of Or lando, Florida. boys talking. It looks like Floyd has a top horse here. * * * I have received a number of re quests for my showing the film of the 1962 Celebration. Let me know when you want to see it, and I’ll do my best to conform to your schedule. Contact me at Gulf Winds Apartments, St. Petersburg Beach, Florida. TIPS ON TRAINING By JOE WEBB SHOULD YOU WORK A HORSE IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS, SUCH AS RAIN, MUD, ETC.? ANSWER: Yes, if you have a horse you are trying to take to the top, you should work him under all these condi tions. If he is worked this way at .home, you will know what to ex pect of him and he is likely to give a better performance under un favorable conditions in the show ring.
