CASEY JONES STABLES
On a recent trip to Middle Tennessee we stopped by to see Mr . Casey Jones ( no kin to the railroad man !) who was busy working some pretty good stock . Casey has his stable about three miles north of Shelbyville on the Nashville Hiway and currently has eighteen horses in training . Among those horses in the barn about which we had heard some discussion was an eighteen month old black stud colt by GUNSMOKE that is owned by Charlie McCallum of Shelbyville . This is a strong colt that is responding well to training and should be a good one . Another coming two year old that shows great promise is GO BOY ’ S HALL MARK , a black stud colt that is owned by Mr . A . C . Pool of Baltimore , Maryland . This horse has the finest Walking Horse conformation and is built to go right . He has been labeled as a “ top ” prospect and from where we stood looked as if he might make it . Casey thinks so !
We arrived in time to see Casey hit SENSATIONAL SHADOW a few licks and by spring time he should be ready to go . This is a Junior bay stud owned by Philey Patterson of Shelbyville , who is about as willing as any colt we have seen . He will be an aged stud next season and will be pushing MOONLIGHT SHADOW , a four year old bay stud that Casey thinks a lot of . These two horses should give him a good choice every time he gets ready to show . We also saw GO BOY ’ S SAND MAN , which is owned by Charlie Turner of Shelbyville . Casey is starting six two year old colts and hopes to have several good ones by spring .
GREEN & HUGH STABLES
On the way into Shelbyville from Chattanooga we always make a point to stop by and see “ Toby and Buddy ” . . . two of the real gentlemen of the Walking Horse business . These two go-getters are working about as many Walking Horses as anyone in the country and with the assistance of “ Red ” Stacey and his crew of four helpers , manage to get just about everything in the forty-odd stalls under saddle every day . Needless to say , the first horse we went to see was our Junior World ’ s Champion , GUNSMOKE ’ S SON . This terrific black stud is getting fat and sassy and is ready to go at any time .
We missed Buddy Hugh , who had already left for the Chicago International Horse Show , but managed to talk with Toby for awhile before he left for the Nashville Airport on his way to the “ Windy City ”. The big reason for the trip was to see just how much the highly touted GO BOY ’ S ROY AL HEIR had improved since his last show . This horse , owned by Hank Sheely of Dallas , Texas , has been the subject of much discussion lately and appears to be one of the “ new arrivals ” on the “ big horse ” scene . Those who have seen him think so !
Buddy and his crew are working eleven coming two year old colts and all indications are that they have several that will make the grade in a big way . These horses , plus the other top stock already on the way , will just about keep these horsemen pinned down until Spring . As we left , Toby said “ You ’ all come to see us now , Ya hear !” I am sure he meant all of
us . Drop by when you are in Shelbyville .
VIC THOMPSON STABLES
As usual , a crowd of lookers , buyers and other assorted Walking Horse enthusiasts were on hand to greet us as we arrived at Vic ’ s one day last month . Vicky Lynn , the Thompson ’ s horsewise daughter , was looking after the store while Vic was out on a muchearned bird hunting trip . She was busy showing a group of prospective buyers some horses , trying her best to keep them from getting stepped on , kicked or otherwise maimed , while she worked the horses for them . Luckily , no one
got too close .
A busy beaver in his own right , George Livingston , Vic ’ s new assistant trainer , took time out to show us some real top stock . George has been with Vic since the Celebration and has done an excellent job so far . He is working about thirty head of horses and has several that they are all proud of . One particular two year old colt , by the name of GO BOY ’ S BACK LASH , owned by Deedy Decker of Omaha , Nebraska , was put in the cross tie and as we watched and listened , we learned that he had been compared by several people to Billy Brantley ’ s APOL LO . This colt tied second in Baton Rouge and attracted a lot of attention while being beaten by the World Champion Filly , SHAD OW ’ S PERFECTION S . We saw him work and feel that he will certainly be one of the top three year old studs around next year . George has put a canter on him recently and he was not as collected as he otherwise would have been . We could see the makings of a real top horse , however .
The horse that really impressed us however , was a Junior Mare named BEWITCHED . George told us that he believed that this could be the mare to beat next year and ( having heard that before that day ) we coaxed him to show her to us . He made a believer out of me ! This mare is as fine as a deer and is one of the best JET PARADE horses I have seen . She is a deep mahogany bay , owned by Mrs . Bishop of California , and can do three Walking Horse gaits with rhythm and form . Watch for her !
A note of interest from Ed Ezell , Jr ., Manager of Stallion Stables . They will stand STATLEY ’ S GO BOY in the 1965 season . Vic Thompson and Lyle Cashion have placed the horse for stud next year . Details will be announced in the Stallion Directory .
