GUNSMOKE’S SON: Strong Challenger for Junior Championship By Fred E. Friend Both in the class for two-year- old stallions and in the two-year- old stake at the 1963 National Cele bration, a big black horse with worlds of natural walking ability caught the eye of many seasoned observers of Tennessee Walking Horses. He tied fourth in both the class and the stake, but many la beled him the colt to watch in 1964. With the 1964 show season just beginning, veteran trainer Toby Green and his talented part ner, Buddy Hugh, are confident that GUNSMOKE’S SON will live up to these expectations. Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Barkley Brock, Clinton, Missouri, this out standing junior horse is by SUN’S GUNSMOKE and out of a mare by ROMEO ALLEN. His proud own ers are also confident that he has a great future. The practiced eye of Toby Green picked the colt as a weanling. In the class for yearling stallions at the National Celebration GUN SMOKE’S SON tied second. Hav ing purchased one-half interest from Mr. Edgar Poe, Tullahoma, Tennessee, Toby started the colt as a two-year-old and worked him until Buddy Hugh became a part ner in May, 1963. Then Toby turned the horse over to Buddy, but he still actively supervises the train ing. Now a big strong horse of fif teen and one-half hands, he is rapidly developing into a real three- gaited Walking Horse and is show ing exceptional stamina and drive. He is certain to be a top contender in every three-year-old class that he enters. Last season he won blues at Cha pel Hill and LaFayette, Tennessee; he won both the class and the two- year-old stake at Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and he was fourth in his class and also fourth in the two year old stake at the National Cele bration. The schedule for 1964 calls for extensive showing as he is pointed toward the big junior stake at the National Celebration.
