Business Club of Lake Charles will
dedicate the three-day horse show
to be held at McNesse State Col­
lege arena on May 8, 9, and 10 to
Mrs. Walker.
“Walker Stables” first hung its
sign out in north Lake Charles —
in Goosport on Moeling Street on
the Dr. DeJean property.
Her first pupils were Maureen
Wallace (now Mrs. Dale Cannon)
and Sandra Kiplinger (now Mrs.
Fred Colby Jr.) who learned riding
on “Slim” and “Rye” the two
horses with which Mrs. Walker
started out.
The first two horses to join the
stables were “Likely McDonald”
owned by Patty Welch and “Cho­
colate Soldier” owned by Mrs.
Harold Osborne.
“Chocolate Soldier” was the de­
pendable mount for beginners and
experienced riders alike as the sta­
bles grew into one of the finest
riding academies in the South.
The Horse Show association was
formed here eight years before
Ruth Walker opened her riding
academy. As interest declined af­
ter the initial years, it was Ruth
Walker’s efforts that kept alive in­
terest in the art of proper horse­
manship.
The Walker stables are now sit­
uated on Country Club Road.
The dedication is a fitting tri­
bute to the woman who has done
so much to further the art of classi­
cal horsemanship in the Sabine
area.
