All riders were determined to show these first year cantering animals for all they were worth. From the moment they came in, GO BOY’S BLACK JACK, with Donald Paschall up and PERFECTION’S CARBON COPY, Joe Webb up, were in a hot contest for first. The crowd’s participation was intense but failed to sway the decision. BLACK JACK received the first place nod from call judge and referee and second by No. 2 judge. The crowd’s pleasure varied and finally agreed with the judges ... GO BOY’S STARFIRE with Douglas Wolaver up. He received the first spot with both judges and second with the referee. MAGIC SHADOW, rid­ den by Jimmy Waddel received enough point spread to win second while DUTY’S BEST CHANCE, with George Witt up placed third. Buddy Hugh, on GUN- SMOKE’S SUN received the bid for fourth in this top preliminary for the 2-year-old Championship. All of these horses, including some that “got the gate” will bear watching in 1964.
