Nevans Class No. 52 TWO-YEAR-OLD WALKING HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP STAKE The triumph of GO BOY’S STARFIRE, with Doug YVolaver up for Steve Beech, in the Two-Year-Old Championship Stake raised no eyebrows among folks who have seen that horse sweep blue ribbons all sea­ son long in Middle Tennessee and parts of Alabama. He drew votes of the two judges, but the referee picked GUNSMOKE’S SUN, Buddy Hugh up for Toby Green, Shelbyville. Under the “Weighted Judging” Hugh received fourth place although he was chosen for one first, one third and one sixth place. His riding was a feature among the performances of young trainers at the Cele­ bration. Second place went to GO BOY’S BLACK ANGEL B.R., Bud Seaton up for Okley Hayes Stables, Herrin, Illinois. BLACK JACK drew a two-to-one decision over CARBON COPY—with Joe Webb up —in both the Wednesday night three-year- old stallion preliminary and in the Junior Championship Stake Friday night. It was a direct reversal of last year’s Celebration showing when Webb piloted CARBON COPY to two victories over BLACK JACK in the two-year-old division.
