1963 PARADE OF CHAMPIONS

by Ben A . Green
The 1963 Silver Anniversary Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration was the greatest ever . The VOICE of the Tennessee Walking Horse , in an effort to give you the most comprehensive and complete coverage of this . . . the greatest horse show in the nation , has covered every facit of every event . We present highlights of every class including how the winners placed on the judges and the referees cards . The entire week is covered beginning with the Saturday night Grand Champion Stake .

Eyes of more than 20,000 people bore down like little suns upon the stern-faced Trainer Sam Paschal and his four-year-old “ HORSE ON A CLOUD ” called SUN ’ S DELIGHT . It took place Saturday . night , September 7 , 1963 , as this combination walked along to a record-breaking World ’ s Grand Championship at the Silver Anniversary Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration at Shelbyville , Tennessee .
Pushing the four-year-old for master honors was Louisiana-bred , Texas-trained , six-year-old TRIPLE THREAT of J . Glenn Turner ’ s Circle T Ranch , Roanoke , Texas , with Trainer Harold Kennedy saddling the rugged horse . One judge and the referee voted for SUN ’ S DELIGHT , one judge for TRIPLE THREAT — on the final night . It was that close .
HILL ’ S PERFECTION , a gelding ridden by Steve Hill , finished a unanimous third .
The Saturday night performances of SUN ’ S DELIGHT and TRIPLE THREAT proved somewhat of an anti-climax — however — as the two horses had fought each ohter to the zenith in the Thursday night Stallion preliminary that had a paid crowd of 11,951 ( plus other hundreds ) standing and cheering for many minutes .

HORSE SUN ’ S DELIGHT ............. TRIPLE THREAT ........... HILL ’ S PERFECTION .... pressed minds of many old railbirds — represented “ the greatest ride in the 25 years of Celebration history .”
That being the case — it can be said that it took the “ greatest ride ever ” to get SUN ’ S DELIGHT tied over TRIPLE THREAT , a teriffic contender from start to finish — and he was very strong at the finals . As for Sam — he appeared to many as “ a man riding on a cloud ” with the smoothest Tennessee Walking Horse performance ever seen . His Saturday night showing was much more conservative .
SUN ’ S DELIGHT , owned by Fray Escue Pontiac Company , Covington , Kentucky , was purchased for Mr . Escue last January by year-old A . S . Dean , formerly of Christiana but now residing in Murfreesboro , Route 7 . Delight was reserve champion in the Junior Stake of 1962 — ridden by Neal Branscumb for Mr . Dean .
DELIGHT is a great grandson of the immortal LAST CHANCE and a son of MID NIGHT SUN . His breeding was discussed in the June issue of the Voice that featured DELIGHT on the front cover .
Formally Retired Sept . 14
Delight was formally retired from show ring competition one week after his greatest victory — this ceremony taking place at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville , before an immense crowd on Saturday night ,
