Q — About show horses , didn ’ t they formerly have classes for Aged Stallions and Model Horses .
A — Back at the Celebration years ago they had a class for horses known as the Aged Stallion Class . This class has been discontinued and the Celebration now offers that class as 4 Years Old and Over . Any horse up to 20 years old or even older is eligible to show in this class . Formerly at the Celebration they used to start with the 2-Year-Old Stallion- Gelding , the 3-Year-Old Stallion Gelding , the 4-Year-Old Stallion-Gelding then the Aged Stallion Class .
Why Quit Showing Stallions ?
Most owners quit showing their stallions after they reach about seven or eight years old . As a matter of fact , the stallions are just reaching their prime at these ages , and I believe the exhibitors are beginning to find that out more and more . I notice that more aged stallions are showing nowadays . I know some stallions that are 10 , 11 and 12 years old showing right now and doing well too .
Another former class at the Celebration was called the Model Class . This used to be a good ring of horses at the Celebration because a lot of people had horses that they did not train ; they were beautiful animals and they had wonderful conformation . In the Model Class the exhibitors would lead the horses out into the ring under halter and they would be shown standing at halter . That class has been discontinued at most horse shows today . Nowadays its horses under saddle after you pass the yearling colt classes under halter .
Q — Can you comment on the change in sponsorship of horse shows from society events — as formerly classified — into civic events as recognized today .
A — It has become a custom for civic clubs and similar organizations all over the country to promote horse shows and in Middle Tennessee it is natural that they should promote the Tennessee Walking Horses in classes more than other breeds — because there are more horses of this breed in this area . Nowadays almost all horse shows are promoted by some organization that has a definite goal in mind for use of the profits from the horse show . Quite a few of them make considerable money . I know of one Junior Leaguesponsored show that has made $ 250,000 for the support of its charity projects through horse show promotions .
In the olden days horse shows were often considered just for the white collar and evening dressed and erminewrapped group but it ’ s everybody ’ s business now — on down to the very lowest of the lowly . All can afford to go to a horse show and enjoy it . It ’ s not strictly a society event any more — it ’ s just a wholesome recreation and a wholesome sport .
I think statistics for last year will show that the horse business including racing — drew more spectators than any other sport in the United States .
