SÁMH
The Suicide Awareness and Mental Health Society (SÁMH) is a
new society within UCC which is dedicated to promoting positive
mental health. This society aims to educate students on important
issues such as mental health, suicide and self harm. For too long in
our society has stigma surrounded such topics. SÁMH’s main aims
are to remove such stigmas and promote positive messages. It’s
vitally important to the society to have the student body know that
there is support on campus. Counselling services are available
as are supports from UCC’s Welfare Officer. SÁMH’s objective
to promote positive messages is achieved through various events
held throughout the year. Funds raised during every event

are donated to charities such as Pieta House and Mental Health
Reform. We play an active on campus roll in Mental Health week,
and have other themed days and weeks such as “Mindfulness
Day”, “Body and Soul” week and “Men’s mental health” week.
We hosted a large variety of events and tried to collaborate with
as many other societies as possible so that we could reach a
wider range of people. The society also vowed to allow students to
remember those they have lost to mental illness or suicide. Mental
health affects each member of the student body in some form.
SÁMH is always welcoming to new kids on the block, so come
to a meeting at any time and see what the society is for yourself!

SCIENCE
Science Society is an academic based society. However
it holds many different types of event throughout the
year. Apart from academic talks, the society has it’s
annual ball. The Science Ball is one of the biggest
events on the college calendar, completely selling out
every year. Each year there is a different theme and
there is always great excitement to what it will be. Over
the past few years it has been Harry Potter, Pokémon,
Alice in Wonderland, Mardi Gras and last years was
Monte Carlo.

We also get involved in National Science Week. There
is a different theme every year and we hold events
that best suit this theme. During the year we hold
quizzes, movie screenings and competitions. Our main
competition is the SEFS Prize. This is a competition
where you pick a subject of your choice and make up a
short presentation on it. If you are interested in science,
this is the society for you. Our committee consists of
people from all different fields of science so we always
vary our talks, screenings, etc.
