PHILOSOPHICAL Founded in 1850/51, University College Cork’s Philosophical Society is both the oldest society in the university and one of the most prestigious. In the 1960s Sean MacBride, Nobel Peace Prize winner, called the Philosoph “the centre of independent thought in Ireland” when discussing the state of the nation. The “Philosoph” carries out a number of functions, including the hosting of weekly debates with high profile guest speakers, participating in debating competitions nationally and internationally, running workshops for the students of UCC to develop their public speaking skills and organising competitions for school children. [email protected] The society offers a prime opportunity to get to know not just your fellow first years in UCC while partaking in a fun and engaging activity, but also to get to know other first years in colleges all around Ireland and further afield. Travel opportunities include trips to Dublin, Belfast, London and the Netherlands. For those who prefer stay at home, our lively house debates - featuring high profile guests and infamous socials - offer an unforgettable experience. We’d love to see first years become involved, either by attending our many events, or by becoming involved with our committee, which is always in need of new blood. uccphilosoph UCCPhilosoph PHOTOGRAPHY Calling all who have a keen interest in photography as well as those who are looking for a new interest or hobby, UCC Photography Society wants you to join us in all our fun and crazy antics!
