JOURNALISM UCC’s Journalism Society is the umbrella society for all who seek to become involved in student journalism and media on campus. We organize workshops, work placements, job shadowing, lectures, and aid students in getting involved with the various campus media outlets such as UCC Express, Motley Magazine and 98.3FM. This year was a bumper year for Journo Soc in terms of events and attendance. In Semester I we held four workshops in the areas of Writing, Radio, Fashion, and Blogging/Vlogging. Our highlight event in Semester II was without doubt the 8th Annual Journalism Conference. Two panels of illustrious speakers, including head of Amnesty [email protected] Ireland Colm O’Gorman, comedian Tara Flynn, and renowned Irish journalist Nell McCafferty spoke on the topics of the Legalisation of Drugs in Ireland and the 8th Amendment. This year saw the launch of The Buzz.ie, UCC’s latest student media outlet. To cap the year off Journo Soc was nominated for a STARS Awards in the area of Best Society Initiative for The Buzz. ie, coming runner-up, and one of our committee members took home a personal award for their outstanding achievements in a truly remarkable year for UCC’s Journalism 2015/16. We are determined to make 2016/17 the best year yet for UCC’s Journalism Society, so make sure you don’t miss out! We began with a focus on knitting, but in the past couple of years we have expanded our reach to all crafts, whatever you’re into, be it knitting, sewing, making friendship bracelets or holiday decorations. Each year we couple our interest in crafts with our passion for charitable work, so if you like getting creative for a good cause, this is the society for you! Our projects are tailored to beginners, so don’t worry if you’ve never tried crafts before. [email protected] SOCIETY BIOS We provide everything you need (including a healthy helping of tea and biscuits) and we’ll be happy to teach you. Our main events are craft workshops, which vary in theme and focus each week, but we also like to hold quizzes and run events in collaboration with other societies. Knitting and other crafts are a great skill and hobby to have, as well as being a relaxing addition to hectic college life. We’d love to see you at our events this year; there really is something for everyone in our society so pop along, have a cuppa and learn something new. UCCKnitSoc UCCKnitSoc 37
