area where they don’t know anyone.

when they’re not in a good place. It’s
heartwarming to see the light in their
eyes and their smiles when they’ve
come full circle—survivors who have
received support and been made whole.

Kudos for Zen
In 2016, the Santa Clara County District
Attorney’s offi ce acknowledged Zen’s
exemplary work helping survivors of
domestic violence and her pivotal role in
the formation of several Family Justice
Centers by honoring her as the inaugural
recipient of the annual Melinda “Mindy”
Zen Award for Domestic Violence
Victim Advocacy.
In 2017, Community Solutions
presented Zen with the Helping Hands
& Healing Hearts Award at its annual
spring fundraising event in Morgan Hill.
The award recognizes a community
leader dedicated to improving the lives
of others.
Walking in Her Shoes
Zen is often asked what it’s like to be a
female in law enforcement. “My mother
always told me I could do anything I
wanted to do. When I work with our
Explorers, whether they’re girls or
guys, I share my story and the roles
I’ve played in the Morgan Hill Police
Department.
“I tell them, ‘Law enforcement is a
great career. Go on a ride along, read
about what we do. Ask our officers
about their work. If you can see your-
self in these roles, and have the desire
to learn and grow, then go for it. You
can make an impact, address crime and
blight with your hard work, and be part
of the change you want to see.’”

especially in natural disaster and emergency
