George Flores

Rica and Hawaii.
One of Morgan Hill Unified School District’s most dedicated and inspiring
educators, George Flores, passed away on June 20, 2017 after battling
cancer. Flores’ retirement from his post as a science teacher at Britton Middle
School earlier this year marked ten years of exemplary service to the district.
He was beloved by students and colleagues, and is credited with leadership
and support of educational initiatives that will have lasting beneficial impact
on students for years to come. In 2011, Flores co-founded Project Roadmap,
an ongoing program to support students and their families by making college
pathways more accessible. In 2015, Flores was honored by the Morgan
Hill Chamber of Commerce as Educator of the Year for his role in helping to
implement a model program of Multi-tiered Systems of Support at Britton.
He also founded and led Britton’s Volcano Kids Club to provide students with
opportunities to embark on science learning adventures in Costa Rica, Hawaii,
and other locations. And, his advocacy led to the district’s establishment of
the Math Engineering Science Achievement Club for first-generation college
bound students. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will live on.
At a memorial service for George held on July 8th, the Board of Directors
of Project Roadmap announced that its annual conference will henceforth be called
the George Flores Youth and Parent Conference. George was the driving force behind
Project Roadmap’s inaugural conference, which is now a lasting tribute to George’s
vision of equity and opportunity for all students.

On Saturday, May 13th, Rebekah Children’s Services
hosted their first ever Mother’s Day Walk for Foster Youth.
With May being Foster Awareness Month, it was a great
time to promote all of the amazing work the Foster &
Adoption team at Rebekah Children’s Services does for
the children and families in our community. The goal
was to bring awareness to the need for foster families
in Gilroy and the surrounding cities. Approximately 100
participants were in attendance to listen to Pastor
Malcom MacPhail share his own personal story before
sending off the walkers through the beautiful grounds
of Gilroy Gardens.
