After joining the Territorial Army in 2004 whilst studying Contemporary Military and International History at university in Greater Manchester, Richard has spent time with the Manchester & Salford University Officer Training Corps, Royal Artillery, Mercian Regiment and most recently the Royal Wessex Yeomanry. He completed an operational tour in Afghanistan on Op. HERRICK 10 with the 4th Battalion, Mercian Regiment in 2009 and has been on a number of international exercises. In 2013 he was a member of the RWxY's Pistol Team that won the Team Championship at the Territorial Army Combat Pistol Competition.

He has since become one of the first Challenger 2 MBT full crewmen in the Army Reserve.
