There are no whitefish above Gore Canyon. Even thought
the whitefish are highly migratory within their given niche,
the populations are separated by swift shoots and
canyons that whitefish aren’t likely to negotiate. “Swift, fast
water is not their type of water. It represents a natural
dividing line,” said Ewert. He explained that whitefish
inhabit the slower, deeper sections of the river, whereas
trout are likely to be found in the riffles and swifter runs.
Even though the whitefish and trout cohabitate, the trout
take up more aggressive lies or stations.
If you fished the Colorado River during the peak of the
whitefish run in October and November you’d think that
whitefish far outnumbered trout in the river. Not true
