“ We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.” These are the wise words of Thomas Fuller… as well as many people today. Clean, drinking water is still one of the world’s biggests problems; economically and environmentally. Luckily here in Canada, just the turn of a tap conveniently pours out fresh, drinking water. How nice is that? In many other countries, you would have to walk several kilometers away to get a day’s load of water. Now if you think it doesn’t get any worse than that, well it does. After walking what feels like a million miles, the water you get is not even clean. The water is contaminated with bacteria that causes cholera, typhoid, and dysentery disease. So it is basically wasting energy and time. The time spent fetching dirty water could have been used to learn a new skill, to earn money, or to break the cycle of poverty. It really is a devastating issue that affects millions and millions of people.

Fortunately other people see this as a devastating issue too. Free The Children, schools, and other organizations are helping out and creating effective solutions for this obstacle. Free The Children has built many wells and pumps that supply clean water to drink. New pipes were installed and a water storage tank was set to aid the children and their families. And now that the pumps are closer to the communities, children can now go spend their time learning. Schools also fundraise, raising money for better technology for the communities.

You, we, are very fortunate to live in a country where clean water exists! Don’t take it for granted. But everyday we are truly making a big difference, but we can’t just stop there; go to www.weday.com and learn more about water and other world issues. Go fundraise at your school! Nothing is better than working together as a team.
