Livingston American School held its first ever Saturday “Back to School Bash,” which allowed many students and staff members to become familiarized with each other through participating in various fun and unusual activities. While many people resented the idea of having to participate in a school related activity on a Saturday, in the end, most stated that they were glad that they came.

“Face painting was definitely the most interesting activity here,” Jay, an 11th grader, stated. “I got the opportunity to interact with small kids.” As the event began, more and more booths, each hosting its own and unique activity, were set up all along the track and the school pathways. Some vended food; others sold clothes, while most hosted activities such as face painting or small games.

Moreover, SLAS hosted a live concert, in which many talented and skilled performers took part. The bash opened with the performances by the SLAS Chilly Cheese Fries, which were followed by the performances by elementary students. The most spectacular performance was show done by the Japanese kindergarten; the children formed various challenging and remarkable gymnastic moves, from simple two-people structures to human pyramids. The entire school was amazed by how quickly and effectively these tiny children could make these incredible moves, and when their shows concluded, everyone applauded and shouted out their approval.

“I love the food,” Ms. Green, a secondary English teacher, commented. “The food booths are mainly from places where I eat, so the food is very familiar.”The food was one of the aspects of the school bash that received many praises. There were all kinds of food booths during the back to school bash, including Japanese and Korean food, and even food from the Blue Frog. Professional cooks could be seen manning several of the booths, and each food booths had long lines of people waiting to try its food.

Furthermore, many students took this chance to earn some community service hours by helping around in booths. For instance, several students, including middle school students, staffed a booth that sold popcorn and candies. Some other students also helped carry and set up the equipment needed for the concert, while others helped set up booths and return the booth equipment when the school bash ended. Additionally, other students took this chance to raise funds for their classes; the students of Ms. Martin’s AP classes operated a face painting booth the entire time to raise funds for their AP field trips.

Overall, the back to school bash was actually very successful. Whether it was the performances that made the bash stand out, or the booths that made the bash shine, everything was perfectly planned and well-rehearsed. Even though the expectations for this back to school bash were quite high, the bash had still greatly exceeded everyone’s expectations.
