''When I was in my early twenties I had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and the illness was quite intense. I made my 3 chess sets over long sessions often throughout the night. I used junk basically, for instance car parts, chemistry lab equipment, household items etc. I felt very manic and creative at the time. It seemed to help calm the hallucinations and other negative symptoms of my illness. Since then I have continued to sculpt, paint and make various crafts like hat making and bookbinding. I have had my paintings exhibited on a small scale. Throughout my illness, aspects of art have always helped me release the anguish and worst symptoms of my illness.''
