Book Week Scotland, 19 - 26 November
Pupils in the Secondary School were encouraged to celebrate Book Week Scotland -
a National celebration of books and reading - in a variety of ways. We started first
thing on Monday morning when the whole of Tutor Group period was handed over
to reading. Later some of our S1 pupils were able to share stories and picture books
with pupils in P1. During the week some of our senior pupils visited S3 and S4 classes
to talk to them about what they liked to read, favourite authors and so on.
Lunchtimes in the LRC were devoted to reading and drinking copious amounts of hot
chocolate. On Thursday - the day designated nationally as Reading Lunch Day - the
LRC hosted a ‘Treat Lunch’ when pupils from S1, S2 and S3, who had been nominated
by their teachers, were treated to a lunch. Finally, senior pupils went to nearby
Parkdale Care Home to share short stories and poems with the residents there.
Book Week Scotland provided an enjoyable and successful way to highlight the
importance of reading through all ages and stages in school and beyond, reminding
us of the joy and comfort that reading for pleasure brings to us all.
