Mock Trial 2017 (by Rachel Cameron S5)
Saturday 4th November 2017 dawned cold and damp. A team of S5/6 students along with
Social Subjects Teachers, Mr Henderson and Mrs Richmond met at Gleneagles Station at
7.15am! We were on our way to Glasgow High Court to compete in the Mock Trial
Competition - something we had been preparing for over the previous months. We all
took on different roles as Advocates, Witnesses, Macers and Court Clerks. We had worked
on our cases every Friday during WAP with the help of real High Court Advocates; Ximena
and David. Case 1 was an alleged fraud and theft case. Case 2 was an assault charge.
During our WAP time Advocates prepared questions for their Witnesses and also closing
speeches. We practised a lot to make sure we were well prepared for the day.
Round 1 involved the Prosecution of Case 1
against Greenfaulds High School. Emily and Erin
were the Prosecution’s Advocates. They were
both well organised and remained composed and
calm throughout their questioning. Erin’s closing
speech was well thought out and delivered clearly
and lived up to her ‘baby faced assassin’ label due
to her fantastic performance. Iain and Elysia acted
as Witnesses. They both deflected the Defence’s
cross examinations very well. Due to their
performance throughout the first round the Jury
sided with us and gave the verdict of ‘Not Proven’.
