MARYANN POLING
BSYO CONCERT ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR
“If you’re a musician, you know it. If you don’t perform, or conduct, or teach,
or work to enable others to make music, you feel like you’d probably just
burst.” As an oboist and a conductor for the Baltimore Symphony Youth
Orchestras, MaryAnn Poling does all of these things. “I love being the first
person to introduce students to some of the great musical works. This
background knowledge helps students to express their own emotions
through the music they play. And every once in a while I’ll overhear one
kid tell another something like ‘Shostakovich rocks!’ That makes my day.”
