University of Baltimore president and former Baltimore City mayor Kurt
Schmoke knows what the BSO means to the city. He refers to the Orchestra’s
free outdoor performance after the unrest in 2015 as “a great moment of
healing for the entire community”—a reminder that “there is more that unites
us than divides us.” Through the OrchKids program, the BSO gives back to
the community every day. “OrchKids represents an investment in our young
people that will pay dividends for decades. To see the looks on the faces
of the young artists as they receive applause from the audience is priceless.”
