WORDS: JOCK MCLAUCHLAN PHOTOS: GEOFF OSBORNE SUZUKI DR-Z250 uzuki has a great habit of producing models that run for years and years. The DR-Z250 is a fine example of this. The DR-Z has stood largely unchanged for the best part of two decades, yet it is still a versatile machine that’s just as relevant today as when it was first released – maybe more so. In an era where dirt bikes are often very expensive, sophisticated and fragile, this bullet-proof, air/ oil cooled 250 dual-sport must seem heaven- sent for those who simply want a sensible bike. Look away from the latest technology laden trail bikes for a moment and look at the DR-Z. I think it’s the obvious choice for the budget conscious commuter who likes to trail ride Iron age reliability and true dual-sport capability, Suzuki’s long running DR-Z250 still has plenty going for it. and get out there for the weekend exploring. You could turn down any track or trail on this and know you’ve got a capable dirt machine underneath you. Ok, so the air and oil-cooled 250cc four-stroke isn’t going to set your pants on fire, but it makes decent, perky, manageable power and is surprisingly capable off-road if not pushed too fast through the rough stuff. For the hill country farmer in need of an electric-start machine that is a step-up from the traditional farm bike, but who doesn’t want the risks associated with radiators… this DR-Z fits the bill. I think the saying goes something like this… as reliable as an axe. KIWI RIDER 61
