This state law also called the Sanctuary State law, conflicts with Federal Law and the U.S. Constitution which could result in a loss of Federal funds to the City and limits collaboration between local law enforcement and Federal agents to prevent threats to public safety. The City also unanimously voted to join the County of Orange and several other Orange County cities, at no cost to the taxpayers, in an amicus brief challenging the constitutionality of this new state law. The City Council originally opposed this legislation in March 2017, before its adoption, because of its potential impact on public safety and a possible loss of $2,065,300 in Federal funding to Laguna Niguel. This new state law could result in the release of accused criminals back into the community rather than turning them over to ICE for consideration of deportation. Read the full press release here.
