VOL. 55 ● NUMBER 1 ● SPRING 2019
THE NEWSLETTER FOR NUHS ALUMNI
Greetings from the President
In 1957, Martin Luther King Jr. posed the question, “Life’s most
persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”
By the time that question was asked in Montgomery, Alabama,
National had been answering it for over 50 years. Looking through
this installment of the Alumnus, I see that our NUHS community has
remained steadfast in the persistence of answering Dr. King’s question.
Dr. Smith took time out of his holiday to visit with 1971 graduate,
Christian Laurent, just outside of Paris. Dr. Laurent has been providing
service to his community for over four decades. On the national stage,
we were able to celebrate ’97 graduate Ray Tuck as he was named the ACA Chiropractor
of the Year in January. As you look through this issue you will continue to see all that a
National grad can do. France, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, Ohio, Florida – National graduates
are continuing to provide service and leadership at all levels and around the globe.
Our current student body carries on the tradition of service to others. With over 30 different
clubs on two campuses and a co-curricular component in each program of study, our
students embrace service to others and our communities benefit from it. In Illinois for
instance, the community has embraced our naturopathic services, as evidenced by a 173%
increase in the number of unique ICD-10 codes used as a primary diagnosis in the last
year. The availability of our faculty and students to provide integrated health care services
continues to grow and be of great benefit to the public.
Please enjoy this issue of the Alumnus, and know that Dr. Janse’s advice of “Take care of
your patient, and they will take care of you” is still hard at work with NUHS and the many
alumni around the world. Whether you are celebrating the anniversary of your practice, a
new addition to the family, a publication, or being elected to the head of your state society,
we always want to hear about it and share it with others. I also urge you to come and share
those successes as the University celebrates ten years of service from our Florida site this
August at our Homecoming gathering in Orlando. So, to answer Dr. King’s question, look
no further than these pages.
